John McCain announced that he will suspend his presidential campaign on Thursday to return to Washington to help with bailout negotiations. He urged his opponent Barack Obama to do the same.
The Arizona senator also asked the Presidential Debate Commission to postpone Fridays scheduled debate with Obama so that he can work on the financial crisis bailout plan now on Capitol Hill.
America this week faces an historic crisis in our financial system. We must pass legislation to address this crisis. If we do not, credit will dry up, with devastating consequences for our economy. People will no longer be able to buy homes and their life savings will be at stake. Businesses will not have enough money to pay their employees. If we do not act, ever corner of our country will be impacted. We cannot allow this to happen, McCain said.
I disagree, as Rush would say this is “Symbolism over Substance.”
Re my post: “How does one prepare for a debate when sitting in Senate hearings?”
and Your Post: “How does one take part in a debate in Mississippi when you’re voting on the floor of the U.S. Senate in DC?”
So I take it you are agreeing with me that appearing in DC would put the kibosh on a debate in Mississippi on Friday?
“I’m thinking of a number between one and ten.”
More like...
Holy Schmidt!
It forces Obama to attack McCain for.............putting the nation’s interests ahead of politics.
Brilliant.
Ah, the article says Obama is claiming the idea was his. Oh brother.
ROTFLOL!
Another level of brilliance re this move (and true patriotism, as well):
Consider you’re running for Prez. The decisions being made this week are going to be front and center at the heart of the domestic side of your 1st term (and likely beyond). Wouldn’t you want to have a seat at that table while Chuk-U Schumer, Hillary, Reid, Pelosi, Fwanks, et al are determining whether your presidency is going to start with only one or both testicles being removed (politically speaking, of course).
Congress is supposed to recess on Friday. McCain could use this suspension of his campaign to push Obama to lead his party to stay in session through at least next week to iron out the details of what is needed.
Maybe he debates Biden?
He’s gonna look real silly debating by himself while the rest of congress is working. Maybe SaraCuda can entertain him instead? LOL
Imo, they need to continue with the debates, but possibly suspend campaigning durng the rest of the week and weekend.
“McCain has balls.”
...and no brains. I don’t think this is going to end up being a smart move for McCain. My first reaction (and Rush’s) was good grief.
All Obama has to say, “what you can’t walk and chew gum at the same time” or “I’m running for the highest office in the land, I’ll let the Senate do what it’s suppose to do...”
Apparently you don’t understand what dangerous situation were are in right now. We are on the verge of Great Depression 2. A debate in that light is absolutely silly.
Think of it as the defense calling timeout, just as the placekicker is lining up to try a 52-yard field goal.
McCain and Obama are both sitting Senators, and yet we are paying them to campaign instead of do their jobs.
IMO, both these guys need to be back in the Senate right now.
McCain is not making a political move, he’s doing the right thing by going back.
oooh...that's a great idea. McCain issues a statement saying that's he's helping to implement the economic fix and that he's confident in the judgment and skills of his vp to participate in a political debate with Obama. I would LOVE to see that!
Like any of them are going to be able to do anything useful.
Let it ride, let it crash, at least it will be stable when it’s through.
I think it’s a good move. Shows leadership and that he is ahead of Obama on initiative...
Nope ... just by waiting a couple of days, McCain put Obama on the spot in a big way.
That may well turn out to be true, and I hope for McCain's sake it does.
