John McCain announced that he will suspend his presidential campaign on Thursday to return to Washington to help with bailout negotiations. He urged his opponent Barack Obama to do the same.

The Arizona senator also asked the Presidential Debate Commission to postpone Friday’s scheduled debate with Obama so that he can work on the financial crisis bailout plan now on Capitol Hill.

“America this week faces an historic crisis in our financial system. We must pass legislation to address this crisis. If we do not, credit will dry up, with devastating consequences for our economy. People will no longer be able to buy homes and their life savings will be at stake. Businesses will not have enough money to pay their employees. If we do not act, ever corner of our country will be impacted. We cannot allow this to happen,” McCain said.

McCain is doing the right thing, foreign policy is not on everyone’s mind this week, the economy is. I was thinking if McCain showed at the debate he should demand they talk about the economy.

He's doing them both a favor. If they had shown up at that debate on the day of the vote, neither having voted, and failed to mention the sellout, they would have appeared to be nothing but out-of-touch. One thing I'll say about Mac, sometimes he listens. They were just bitching about him not getting involved in this on the radio this morning.

A microcosm of Obama’s leadership skills. Press statements solve all issues.

Major Garrett just reported that Obama called Mccain at 8:30 am EDT today and said lets get together and issue a joint statement on this critical financial problem facing America.

The question is, will Obama reject McCain’s call for bipartisanship and not halt all his campaign activities.

We shall see.

I don’t like this. This is like Jimmy Carter refusing to campaign in 1980 because of the Iran Hostage situation, ask Jimmy how well that worked out for him in the end.

Obammy won’t suspend.

He'll probably show up to the foreign policy debate on Friday, substitute card-board cutouts of McCain and Bush in McCain's chair, and claim that McCain-Bush feared showing up to debate him.

But, I don't expect Obama to suspend the debate. He'll continue with the campaign. Like all good communists, he'll do whatever it takes to win.

"0 says they contacted McCain about issuing a joint statement, not suspending campaigns and the debate. (as far as I can gather)"

If true, why didn't they put that out to the press earlier today? You'd think they would have, to have the advantage with the public. They said nothing until pressed by the media to respond to McCain's statement. Their claims sound like BS to me.

I’m with the Republicans against Bush on this. I hope it does not pass at all. I hope that McCain does not vote for it. Most Republicans are against Bush on this. If the Republicans were smart, they would let it fail and leave the Democrats holding the bag. The Dems blocked all the legislation to prevent this. The Dems blocked all the energy plan legislation. The Republicans ought to block this legislation. Let Republicans do some blocking for a change.

Brilliant move by McCain b/c he is showing leadership- not just talking about.

If Obama doesn’t follow McCain’s lead, people will think he is putting politics first. If he does follow McCain’s lead, he will be the “follower.”

http://www.cbsnews.com/blogs/2008/09/24/couricandco/entry4474691.shtml

Katie Couric: If this doesn’t pass, do you think there’s a risk of another Great Depression?

Sarah Palin: Unfortunately, that is the road that America may find itself on. Not necessarily this, as it’s been proposed, has to pass or we’re gonna find ourselves in another Great Depression. But there has to be action taken, bipartisan effort – Congress not pointing fingers at this point at … one another, but finding the solution to this, taking action and being serious about the reforms on Wall Street that are needed.

I totally agree. McCain may not win (I think he will), but he is a magnificent campaigner, given the hand he’s been dealt. I don’t know how he’s doing it.

He may not have shown Annapolis professors everything they wanted to see, but John McCain has learned the art of war. Much of that training I would wish on no man.

Oh, man—what will the demwits do with this pie in the face. Cameron seems to be a fairly steady guy. I’d pretty much take to the bank—or maybe not (if you get my meaning) anything he reports.

There is no way Onada can leave his pres. campaign to Biden. What a way to set up the debate!!!!! McCain has given the Messiah no place to go. There is no good choice for Onada. And it plays right into McCain’s slogan—”America First”. IMO McCain is running a much more intelligent—and aggressive—campaign than Bush did in his two presidential runs. Personally, I thought those Rove-managed campaigns were too tepid. That’s why they were as close as they were. And the Bush team, even with his brother governor, was completely asleep at the switch in FL.
