John McCain announced that he will suspend his presidential campaign on Thursday to return to Washington to help with bailout negotiations. He urged his opponent Barack Obama to do the same.

The Arizona senator also asked the Presidential Debate Commission to postpone Friday’s scheduled debate with Obama so that he can work on the financial crisis bailout plan now on Capitol Hill.

“America this week faces an historic crisis in our financial system. We must pass legislation to address this crisis. If we do not, credit will dry up, with devastating consequences for our economy. People will no longer be able to buy homes and their life savings will be at stake. Businesses will not have enough money to pay their employees. If we do not act, ever corner of our country will be impacted. We cannot allow this to happen,” McCain said.

Reminds me of a football game where one team is about to score and the other team calls a time out to make them think about it.

Somehow I can’t believe that Obama’s team made the first move. Had they done it, they would have been all over the news with it. But they wait until they got about 15 phone calls from Major Garrett for a response to McCain’s statement?

Smart political move. I hope he fails miserably in trying to “save” the bailout though.

“Now 0’s people are saying this was *his* idea *first*.”

Oh, that’s great. Whine some more Obama. That’s the only way you could look worse right now.

DID he cancel the debate?

I’ve heard a lot of speculation but not seen any confirmation of that yet.

So let him prove it.

[and why wasn’t *he* on TV making the announcement?]

No matter what *they* say *now*, America saw McCain on national TV asking for it, first.

Why not let them debate in the Senate???? The perfect place for it.

It's an overreaction. President Bush isn't even using words like “crisis” or delaying speeches and photo ops at the UN. My personal opinion but it seems like a staged overreaction meant to upstage the president.

How does one prepare for a debate when sitting in Senate hearings?

How does one take part in a debate in Mississippi when you're voting on the floor of the U.S. Senate in DC?

Biden is still a senator so does he play politics or go back to DC and do his job?

Btw, Hannity just read a short release from Obama - they say there is no reason to delay Friday’s debate. Putting politics above country it seems.

It’s such a bold and brilliant move - on so many levels!
Obvious: O’Hussein and O’Biden must go back and do the jobs for which they were elected - they won’t decide to do this just right now (can’t be seen as the lackeys that they really are), but will eventually “see the light”.
Don’t forget that none of the senators - McC, BOH, and Plugs - have resigned their positions (wasn’t it only Dole who did that?) to run for higher office. Their PAID jobs are in the well of the US Senate.
That leaves only Palin - who as a state governor really has no say in federal legislation - to continue campaigning. And, if BOH refuses, send the pitbull to debate him. He’ll get creamed!

"Call me back at 3:00 and I'll have an answer for you. "

The question is above his paygrade.

0 says they contacted McCain about issuing a joint statement, not suspending campaigns and the debate. (as far as I can gather)

It sounds like Obama call Mac in order to come up with a “joint statement” on how to deal with the situation. Mac decided to DO something about it instead.
