:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Calculating the Risks in Pakistan

A small group of U.S. military experts and intelligence officials convened in Washington for a classified war game last year, exploring strategies for securing Pakistan's nuclear arsenal if the country's political institutions and military safeguards began to fall apart.

The secret exercise — conducted without official sponsorship from any government agency, apparently due to the sensitivity of its subject — was one of several such games the U.S. government has conducted in recent years examining various options and scenarios for Pakistan's nuclear weapons: How many troops might be required for a military intervention in Pakistan? Could Pakistani nuclear bunkers be isolated by saturating the surrounding areas with tens of thousands of high-powered mines, dropped from the air and packed with anti-tank and anti-personnel munitions? Or might such a move only worsen the security of Pakistan's arsenal?

Yes, it is a concern for it’s potential biowarfare use. Now they say the swine flu surfacing in Missouri has some of the H5N1 genes.

There was a report last year or the year before that about this avian flu being played with by the North Koreans in some bunker. I do recall reading that the report had made it to the daily Presidential briefing. And the concern about China being the state entity instead of North Korea remains possible. Also, you may recall the “heads up” posting when China sent “Peacekeepers” into Africa when the last ebola outbreak ocurred.

The avian flu symptoms of this latest ebola outbreak have made some mention in the public health blogs that this is a new ebola type.

Safeway may have received ground beef affected by salmonella

December 20, 2007: 08:54 PM EST Safeway (SWY) said it was notified by the USDA that it may have received ground beef affected by Salmonella Newport between Sept. 19 and Nov. 5. in Arizona, California, Hawaii, Nevada and New Mexico.

The Pleasanton, Calif., food and drug retail chain said ground beef in its stores today isn't the subject of the alert, and that no Safeway product has tested positive for Salmonella Newport to date.

Safeway said there have been no reported illnesses in Hawaii and New Mexico, and that there is a single reported case in Idaho that has no apparent ties to Safeway stores.

The company is asking customers who bought raw ground beef products purchased in the five affected states from Sept. 19-Nov. 5 to discard the product. Fresh ground beef patties aren't included in this notice.

Cases of vomiting virus spiking around NY metro area

Emergency rooms are now seeing a total of about 500 cases of norovirus a day compared to a typical daily average of 300. The virus, also a plague aboard cruise ships over the past few years, can cause days of severe vomiting and diarrhea along with cramps, the chills and fevers.

Illness traced to a new strain

Federal scientists have discovered that a new strain of norovirus is responsible for the wave of intense gastrointestinal infections that have overwhelmed hospitals, nursing homes, and college dormitories across New England and the nation this winter.

Canada confirms 11th case of Mad Cow Disease

Canada confirmed its 11th case of mad-cow disease, in an animal born before a ban on feed ingredients that can spread the brain-wasting illness.

The sick animal was a 13-year-old beef cow from Alberta, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency said today in a statement on its Web site. No part of the animal entered the human food or animal feed systems, it said.

The discovery comes a month after the U.S. lifted most of the remaining import restrictions on beef and cattle from Canada after determining that the animals pose ``minimal risk'' for mad-cow disease, clinically known as bovine spongiform encephalopathy. The U.S. banned cattle and beef from Canada in May 2003 when the country confirmed its first BSE case.

Ding. Ding. Bong.

We have a winner for today’s STUCK ON STUPID award and I do believe Rafsanjani will be a contender in this year’s competition for the ULTIMATE STUCK ON STUPID award 2007.

Press Release A071223a

Coalition forces target al-Qaeda networks in Diyala, 12 suspects detained

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Coalition forces detained 12 suspected terrorists today during operations targeting al-Qaeda networks in the Diyala River Valley region and northern Iraq.

Coalition forces conducted a series of coordinated operations north of Muqdadiyah targeting alleged associates of the network operating in the northeast Diyala River Valley region. One of the targeted individuals is believed to be involved in terrorist media and propaganda operations and a direct associate of senior leadership in the network.

During one of the operations, the ground force detained five suspected terrorists and found a cache of weapons and explosive materials. Local citizens informed Coalition forces that one of the buildings was believed to be rigged with explosives. Once the target area was secure, the ground force called for supporting aircraft to engage the perceived threat, destroying two buildings and the weapons cache to prevent further use by terrorists. Secondary explosions erupted following the strike, indicating that weapons were inside the building. Nearby, the ground force located and safely destroyed another building reportedly used for terrorist operations.

Northeast of the city, Coalition forces captured two wanted individuals believed to be involved in the terrorist networks operating in the Hamrin Mountains and the Diyala River Valley region. Reports indicate the area is an al-Qaeda operations area used for training and facilitation activities. In addition to the wanted individuals, the ground force detained two suspected terrorists on site.

During other operations near Samarra and Mosul, Coalition forces detained three suspected terrorists while targeting associates of al-Qaeda networks responsible for attacks against Iraqi and Coalition forces.

“Our tireless efforts to remove al-Qaeda from Iraq reach into every corner of the country,” said Maj. Winfield Danielson, an MNF-I spokesman. “There is no safe haven for terrorists in Iraq.”
