:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Calculating the Risks in Pakistan

A small group of U.S. military experts and intelligence officials convened in Washington for a classified war game last year, exploring strategies for securing Pakistan's nuclear arsenal if the country's political institutions and military safeguards began to fall apart.

The secret exercise — conducted without official sponsorship from any government agency, apparently due to the sensitivity of its subject — was one of several such games the U.S. government has conducted in recent years examining various options and scenarios for Pakistan's nuclear weapons: How many troops might be required for a military intervention in Pakistan? Could Pakistani nuclear bunkers be isolated by saturating the surrounding areas with tens of thousands of high-powered mines, dropped from the air and packed with anti-tank and anti-personnel munitions? Or might such a move only worsen the security of Pakistan's arsenal?

Press Release A071228a
December 28, 2007

Coalition forces disrupt al-Qaeda in Iraq operations; five killed, 14 detained

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Coalition forces killed five terrorists and detained 14 suspects today during operations targeting al-Qaeda in central and northern Iraq.

During an operation north of Muqdadiyah, Coalition forces targeted associates of the al-Qaeda in Iraq network operating in the northeast region of the Diyala River Valley. Reports indicate the individuals are associated with the group of terrorists involved in numerous engagements with Coalition forces during recent operations in the region.

When the ground force arrived in the target area, the occupants were requested to come out of the building. Four armed men fled the building and maneuvered into nearby palm groves. Supporting aircraft was called to engage the armed men, killing four terrorists. Once Coalition forces cleared the area, they found that each of the men had been armed with a machine gun, military style assault vest and multiple grenades. One building and all of the weapons, to include several others found in one of the target buildings, were safely destroyed on site to prevent further use by terrorists. Six additional suspected terrorists were detained during the operation.

Near Salman Pak, Coalition forces targeted an alleged al-Qaeda in Iraq cell leader involved in weapons facilitation and attacks on Coalition and Iraqi forces in the Arab Jabour region. As the ground force began to clear the area, they observed an individual maneuvering away from the target building and into a nearby reed bed, attempting to evade capture. Coalition forces followed the man to another target area, and as forces entered the building, the suspect made a sudden move toward something. Perceiving hostile intent, the ground force engaged the man, killing him. As Coalition forces cleared the room, a weapon was located, and one suspect was detained.

During coordinated operations near Samarra and Baghdad, Coalition forces detained seven suspected terrorists while targeting alleged al-Qaeda in Iraq leaders involved in foreign terrorist facilitation and attacks against Coalition forces.

“These operations are examples of our continued success against al-Qaeda,” said Maj. Winfield Danielson, MNF-I spokesman. “Iraqi and Coalition forces are disrupting their operations and diminishing their pool of manpower, but they still pose a threat to innocent Iraqis.”

“Islam vs. Free Speech”
by Jed Babbin
Posted: 12/28/2007

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Under assault by Muslims and multiculturalists, free speech and freedom of the press are dead in Britain. The same sorts of people who killed them in Britain are killing them in Canada. They and their allies are using the British and Canadian courts and tribunals to bury our First Amendment rights in America.

Muslims — individually and in pressure groups — are using British libel laws and Canadian “human rights” laws to limit what is said about Islam, terrorists and the people in Saudi Arabia and elsewhere who are funding groups such as al-Queda. The cases of Rachel Ehrenfeld and Mark Steyn prove the point.”

Bhutto died after hitting sun roof
CNN ^ | December 28, 2007

Posted on 12/28/2007 12:17:20 PM CST by BulletBobCo

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (CNN) — Benazir Bhutto died as a result of a fractured skull after hitting her head on part of her car’s sun roof, not as a result of a bullet or bomb shrapnel, a spokesman for Pakistan’s Interior Ministry said Friday.

Asif Ali Zardari, in white cap on left, helps carry the coffin of his wife Benazir Bhutto during Friday’s burial.

1 of 6 more photos » Nothing entered the opposition leader’s head, said spokesman Brigadier Javed Iqbal Cheema.

At a news conference, Cheema showed images of Bhutto in a car, standing up through an open sunroof, looking out at the crowd as she was about to be driven away.

When the gunshots rang out and the explosion occurred, Bhutto “fell down or perhaps ducked” and apparently hit her head on a lever, Cheema said, adding that the lever was stained with blood. Watch how investigators think Bhutto died »

The article that I saw said that as she was ducking back into the car her head was knocked into the lever by the shock wave of the explosion. I don't see any reason why that would be implausible, although I am a little surprised that they said that she wasn't hit by any shrapnel. However if her head was at the level of the roof of the car at the time of the explosion, she may well have been protected from shrapnel by the edge of the roof (the bomber was on a motorcycle and would be below the roof line).

I'm not quite sure I see why the precise location of the deadly wound matters at this point.

It is not the location of the wound I find interesting.
It is the changes in stories of what caused the wound.

I am very skeptical of “The Pakistani Interior Ministries” reports.

I am very skeptical of “The Pakistani Interior Ministries” reports.

Since there was no autopsy done at the hospital, and many different people reporting what they saw or heard, I'm not too surprised that the story has changed several times; that's pretty normal in such confusing circumstances.

I don't trust the Pakistani Interior Ministry either, but I see no reason why they would try to hide the immediate cause of death. (They might well try to hide any government incompetence or co-operation with al Qaeda or other terrorist groups, even if it involved only lower-level officials and not Musharraf or any of his close associates).

Agreed. Which is what makes the whole thing a mess. I know Al Qaeda wanted her head, but so did others in Pakistan.

Al Qaeda may have pulled the trigger(which most of us believe the Musharraf Government has infiltrators) so we
can’t trust them. At the very least, she was not protected.

I don’t think she hit her head, plausible yes, in a far fetched way.

It makes me suspect because I was holding out hope that the
Musharraf Government would come out and do the right thing.

Once again they have failed. They have just made themselves look more guilty.

“Muslim pressure”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Mr. Coughlin came under fire from pro-Muslim officials after a memorandum he wrote identified several groups that are being courted by Mr. Islam’s community outreach program as front organizations for the pro-extremist Muslim Brotherhood.

Mr. Coughlin based the memorandum on documents released as evidence in a federal terrorism trial that he stated “are beginning to define the structure and outline of domestic jihad threat entities, associated nongovernmental organizations and potential terrorist or insurgent support systems.”

Mr. Coughlin noted that the documents identified one of the Muslim Brotherhood front groups as the Islamic Society of North America, whose leaders were hosted by Mr. England in April at the Pentagon, raising concerns that the deputy defense secretary does not understand clearly the nature of the Islamist threat he is working against as the No. 2 official.”

“Judea: Two Young Hikers Murdered by Terrorists”

SNIPPET: “Two hikers in their 20’s were murdered in a terror attack at Telem Spring, near Adora.

The two were part of a group of young people from Kiryat Arba who had gone hiking to the spring, a secluded nature spot.

According to Channel 10, an all-terrain vehicle drove up next to them and a terrorist who was inside opened fire, killing two youths. A woman who was with them managed to hide and save herself.

There were also reports that the hikers shot back at the attackers and wounded one of the terrorists. The Red Crescent reportedly evacuated the Arab casualty to a nearby hospital.”

“Pakistan implicates Baitullah Mehsud in Bhutto assassination”
By BILL ROGGIODecember 28, 2007 3:54 PM

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “The Pakistani government has directly implicated the commander of newly created Movement of the Taliban in Pakistan, or Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan. Interior Ministry spokesman Javed Iqbal Cheema claimed the government intercepted a phone conversation between none other than Baitullah Mehsud, the leader of the Pakistani Taliban, and Maulvi Sahib, one of Mehsud’s underlings.

The Telegraph has the transcript of the alleged recording. Baitullah congratulates Sahib, who explains the attack was carried out by three of their own operatives.

Maulvi Sahib: Congratulations, I just got back during the night.
Baitullah Mehsud: Congratulations to you, were they our men?

Maulvi Sahib: Yes they were ours.

Baitullah Mehsud: Who were they?

Maulvi Sahib: There was Saeed, there was Bilal from Badar and Ikramullah.

Baitullah Mehsud: The three of them did it?

Maulvi Sahib: Ikramullah and Bilal did it.

Baitullah Mehsud: Then congratulations.

Yesterday, Mustafa Abu al Yazid, al Qaeda’s commander in Afghanistan, boasted to a Pakistani journalist that al Qaeda was behind the attack. “We terminated the most precious American asset which vowed to defeat [the] mujahadeen,” Yazid said in a phone call to Syed Saleem Shahzad.

The Pakistan government’s claim that Baitullah Mehsud is behind the attack and al Qaeda’s claim of credit for the strike are not mutually exclusive. The Bhutto assassination also was very likely carried out with support from inside the police, military, and intelligence agencies.”

I get tired of people wondering why this should even matter.

It goes beyond the point of how she died. Which is speculative at best.

We have a 3rd world country, as my husband dryman would say, on the verge of civil war, sitting on 100 nukes.

That is why it matters!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
