California Fire Battalion Chief - Whoever Did This Knew What They Were Doing

October 22, 2007

Fire officials are now stating that the Orange County Santiago fire was purposely set and there is speculation that other fires may have also been deliberate. See Interactive Map

Fire officials found three separate “points of origin,” all near the intersection of Silverado Canyon Road and Santiago Canyon Road. Two were on one side of the road, and the third was on the other. “Whoever did this knew what they were doing,” said Kris Concepcion, a fire authority battalion chief. Also, the fire traveled 3 miles in its first 20 minutes when it was ignited about 6 p.m. Sunday, he said.

We are NOT implying that the California fires are an act of terrorism however; the threat of pyro-terrorist attacks pose a significant risk to the U.S. and the fires in California and in Greece earlier this year should be a wake-up call.

In 2003 an FBI memo alerted law enforcement agencies that an al-Qaeda terrorist being held in detention had talked of masterminding a plot to set a series of devastating forest fires around the western United States.

It was reported that the detainee, who was not identified, said the plan involved three or four people setting wildfires using timed devices in Colorado, Montana, Utah and Wyoming that would detonate in forests and grasslands after the operatives had left the country.

“The detainee believed that significant damage to the U.S. economy would result and once it was realized that the fires were terrorist acts, U.S. citizens would put pressure on the U.S. government to change its policies,” the memo said.

How Can So Many Fires Be By Natural Causes ?

A Local News Radio talk show host in San Diego asked, “how can so many fires, in so many places, in such a short period of time, all be caused by natural causes”.

al-Qaeda Detainee Spoke of Fire Plot

As we have stated before. If you see anything suspicious, report it to law enforcement immediately.

UPDATE: Video - Officials say arson now suspected in Orange County Fire

UPDATE: From Los Angeles Fox News

“I’m sad to report this is an arson fire,” OCFA Chief Chip Prather announced at an early morning briefing. “There were three separate starts: two on one side of the road and one on the other, and obviously we are actively investigating that.”

Links - A number of blogs and websites have sprung up to report on the fires. We will provide links to a couple we’ve found.

People desperately wanted to pin the last set of bad Southern California fires a couple of years ago on Muslim terrorists.

Turned out to be a random assortment of accidents, idiots, and assorted arsonists, as it usually is.

They did arrest one guy with a weird-sounding Armenian name for a wildfire arson and the more clueless on FR briefly got excited thinking he might be a Muslim or Arab.

It never ceases to amaze me how events that ten years ago could be chalked up to natural causes, criminal mischief or incompetence are now some grand Mexi-Muslim plot.

Have all the homegrown kooks, degenerates, psychos and general evil-doers suddenly vanished from our midst? Did we achieve societal nirvana while I wasn't looking?

FBI: al-Qaeda detainee spoke of fire plot
PHOENIX (AP) — The FBI alerted law enforcement agencies last month that an al-Qaeda terrorist now in detention had talked of masterminding a plot to set a series of devastating forest fires around the western United States.
Rose Davis, a spokeswoman for the National Interagency Fire Center in Boise, told The Associated Press that officials there took note of the warning but didn’t see a need to act further on it.

With so many starting points for the current fires, it’s quite likely more than one motivation is at work for the ones that are arson. And the copying of the act of setting a fire doesn’t imply the same underlying motivation.

And there WAS a forest ranger who set a fire a couple of years back. Not sure it was meant to spread, but it did. Something about burning letters from her ex, as I recall.

With the recent downturn in the housing markets, doe anyone wonder if illegal recently out-of-work construction workers have set the fires?

“The detainee believed that significant damage to the U.S. economy would result and once it was realized that the fires were terrorist acts, U.S. citizens would put pressure on the U.S. government to change its policies,” the memo said.

I think the pressure on the US government to change its policies would be in the opposite direction of that hoped for by the jihadis.

I was very suspicious about this from the start. My main suspects would be leftists of some sort: Islamofacists or eco-terrorits. But it could be ordinary pyros.

My late aunt lived near Santa Ana most of her adult life (she was in her 80’s when she passed on). I can remember her talking for a lot of years about the Santa Ana winds and the fires every fall. I don’t believe the fires were ever of this magnitude before, but I do remember her saying that someday we would have a major calamity on our hands. As I recall, some of these fires were arson, but a lot of them were caused by people being careless (dropping cigarettes into dry brush, or not adequately putting out their campfires for example).

You could be right — could be terrorism, but it could also be carelessness, stupidity and/or whackos who think burning homes and businesses and kiling innocents is fun.

No but I precut and drilled custom plywood shutters for every opening on the house. I can button the place up in under an hour.

If it wasn’t arson or terrorism, it would have been a cigarette, lightening, or a welder. The crime is letting people build in tinderboxes.

Given the relatively favorable handling of the evacuation, it is clear that Bush is responsible for starting the fires, so he could show a better reaction than for Katrina. /sarc

Can you point to a single post where anyone suggested anything of the sort? I'll save you the trouble of answering: you can't.

Did the FBI issue warning in the past about al Qaeda plot to start wild fires or not? I'll save you the trouble again: they did.

The only people ruling anything out are the same muslim apologists (Strategerist and friends) who always show up the moment anything suspicious happens in this country to discount even the remotest possibility of islamic terrorism.

Hate to break it to you, but it is a real possibility. Not a likelihood, but a definite possibility. Whether you like it or not.

Good deal..... Litte Brother has steel decorative shutters that he had line x truck bed coating applied too.

They look good on the house and it’s pretty much a run around the exterior and close em . He lost part of his roof the last cane that hit em but not one broken window !

Metal shutters dent from flying debris . Stuff that good 1/2 inch plywwod will absorb for the most part. I have plywood like you do to secure / cover a window broken from hail storms here.

But I have my eye on adding those aluminum box channel roll down shutters in the near future for hail storms etc ......

Well, if half my neighborhood was on fire and I needed to get out of my bad housing deal, this would be the moment of all moments to give it a try.

Maybe it’s illegals, terrorists or pyro’s, but my guess is that there were a couple of “investors” who were way, way underwater on their seven-figure mortgages.

Maybe it's aliens from another planet that want to settle here, and want the humans out of the way.

The speculation, ignorance and BS on this thread is laughable.
