A major terrorist plot to blow up planes in mid-flight has been disrupted by police, Scotland Yard says.
It is thought the plan was to detonate explosive devices smuggled on board aircraft in hand luggage.
During the night, police arrested a number of people in London after a counter-terrorist operation they said had lasted several months.
Police believe the attacks would have been particularly targeted at flights from the UK to the US.
The Department for Transport said security at all UK airports has been increased.
Passengers on all flights will not be allowed to take any hand luggage on to any flights in the UK.
Only the barest essentials - including passports and wallets - will be allowed to be carried on board in transparent plastic bags.

You raise good points...but as always- as Tony Snow reminded us yesterday what's said in private isn't always what's said in public. Also- a lot of the pressure not to go full in a ground invasion is coming from Olmert - there's a great deal of division right now in the Israeli governemnt. Besides that- for PC reasons there must be ongoing diplomatic efforts ..

I don't know how many freepers heard Tony Blair last week when he met with the president at the White House.
At the time Blair spoke, I told freepers he gave the most articulate answer to a question about terrorism and Islamofascism that I've ever heard. And he was fierce in his response.
Now we know why.
And with my trip being cut short I'm flying out of BWI today. Guess I better plan on being there earlier than usual just in case.
I can stream Fox on my satelitte radio - but honestly, I can only stand so much of the babble that goes on between hard news.
They just want to interview them, to find out how they got lost, so they can improve direction signs at airports.

If I were in charge, I would immediately place a 200% excise tax on any product shipped to a port in any of the fifty states from outside of the fifty states. I would eliminate all corporate income tax on profits from products manufactured within any of the fifty states. I would ban the importation of any raw hydrocarbon or refined product starting 365 days from today. I would nullify on the grounds of national security any and all provisions of the Environmental Protection Act which inhibit domestic production of hydrocarbon products or nuclear energy. I would stop all immigration for a period of fifty years and detain indefinitely all persons present in any of the fifty states or the District of Columbia who are not US citizens and who lack either a visa or appropriate work papers, as dictated by their situation.
After that, I'm open to suggestions.
It's going to take one massive attack to convince the moonbats AND still they will blame the U.S. and not the true culprits. Maybe the MBs could be Darwinized out.
And, fire control onboard is not nearly what it could be. Why don't we see sprinkler systems in plane cabins?
