A major terrorist plot to blow up planes in mid-flight has been disrupted by police, Scotland Yard says.
It is thought the plan was to detonate explosive devices smuggled on board aircraft in hand luggage.
During the night, police arrested a number of people in London after a counter-terrorist operation they said had lasted several months.
Police believe the attacks would have been particularly targeted at flights from the UK to the US.
The Department for Transport said security at all UK airports has been increased.
Passengers on all flights will not be allowed to take any hand luggage on to any flights in the UK.
Only the barest essentials - including passports and wallets - will be allowed to be carried on board in transparent plastic bags.

We are going to London and Italy in the fall and I was just thinking that to, they said they wouldn't even allow bottles of water or any liquid.

The "global economy" is a mirage. 5/6 of the world population, if not more, are illiterate and uncultured barbarians. Striving for socialism and destruction of complex systems, as well as the extermination of superior peoples, is their natural condition.

Even the Romans could not pull this off for more than a few hundred years, and that on a much smaller scale.
It might not be PC, but Arabs blowing up innocent people isn't PC either. An unintended consequence is the traveling Arab population will soon tire of the inconvenience and start putting pressure on the groups that support terrorism.
Permanent inconvenience to citizens of countries that support terrorism is the least the civilized world should do...

Bill Gertz: The real deal and not what we've seen in the recent past which is home grown terrorism. This appears to be and intel says it was a major AQ plot and we're not out of the woods yet.

Gertz: Pulled the trigger on the investigation because they thought the plot was in the near future. A successful intel operation.
