President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.
Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

OK. Let's assume nobody told anybody anything. Put yourself on I-10 in sight of one of the most visually prominent man-made structures in the world. A place with buses lining up next to it loading up people and taking them away. What possible direction would you need from a government official to direct you toward that big round, domed life saver? Would you head in that direction, or would you just sit right down on the interstate and demand somebody tell you what to do? If you chose the later (and I'll assume you wouldn't), then perhaps you just might be beyond help.

Sorry, but I heard the Army Corp of Engineers guy on the news this evening. He said, once the levees are repaired (he estimated 4 days for that job), he said it would take 3 to 6 months to drain the city!

There have been airdrops of food and water. The choppers are shuttling drops in, then picking up people off of rooftops on the way out. The C5s are shuttling supplies to open runways near LA, MS, Al & FL, where trucks and helos pick them up. As for looting, remember the first priority is saving peoples lives. There are thousands of people looking to be saved from the lake that was New Orleans. The authorities have the power in such an emergency to take what they need if necessary to provide a life saving function. One emergency center that lost most of its computer & communications equipment commandeered some replacement units at a local Office Depot. As long as they notify the owner what was taken and promise to pay for it later that is entirely legal. I doubt Office Depot will send them a bill.

No, but when a major disaster occurs, it is important to show how serious the disaster is.
The purpose of television news is to use pictures to tell the story.
I would show the bodies in as respectable, far-away view as I could so people would actually "get it."

There is something I would like to ask but am afraid to because of post #1. I realize many people have friends and loved ones in the area - including our own FReeper friends.
Were any of the bridges closed down before Katrina hit? Or were they all still open and packed with people trying to leave town? Some of the pictures posted around of the "gone" Twin Span have cars in the wreckage, so I am unsure as to what happened.
That's because in a foreign country, the military is not constrained by the US Constitution. It's a 14 page document, if you read it some time you'll find out about states rights.

That was just way too late. I have no idea whether his prediction skills on the number of deaths is correct, but that's not he was hired.
It's a fact that the new pumps are in a warehouse, perhaps ruined, because of city mismanagement which long preceded him. But he didn't do anything to change that.
New Orleans is a cesspool of corrupt politics and you can't even get elected unless you're part of that corrupt cabal.

He showed both sides of Cindy with Al Sharpton, it was great! I think he doesn't like her act. BTW... another reason to keep the hurricane front and center.... no Cindy Sheehan news.
If I understand correctly, the water level has equalized on both sides of the breach. With no appreciable current flowing through it anymore, it should just be a matter of dumping material into it to close it off, then pumping out the water on the side that's supposed to be dry. I think the strong flow through the breach was the problem up to this point.

Police rescue efforts have been discontinued so they can focus their attention on trying to get control of the thievin' mob.
Someone else will correct me if I am wrong, but I recall hearing traffic was very light in the hours immediately preceding the worst of the storm.
