> I woud not want to be in an attic or on a roof all day... but these folks have no choice. You have to wonder how many will be found in attics.
Americans have become so accustomed to winging it, that is, proceeding without any advance planning, that it is no wonder that people would suicidally climb up into an attic without the means to cut through to the roof.
I feel bad for these people and their families, but it certainly demonstrates a certain lack of strategic planning on the part of the populace.

"OK. Let's assume nobody told anybody anything." Ahh what has this to do with Shep asking those in charge where they should go? If the answer was obvious why didn't those in charge say so?

Listened to news conference on 870 WWL radio on the way home. They (Gov and Sen) both patting themselves on the back as how they have responded to the disaster. Senator Mary (AKA Twitch) Landieu must have run out of complimentary words to praise the governor. Then the senator started a rant on the Bush administration, blaming the lack of communication as responsible for civil conditions and L&O breakdown. While never naming Bush by name, she said the government has known since 9/11 that communications are a problem and have not addressed it. Went on for a few minutes.

My concern is wide outbreaks of civil unrest spreading beyond the disaster area. Im guessing 24 to 48 hrs before disease like typhus or cholera breaks out and spreads like the flood. Soon the real death toll will start to leak out and that's going to stir things up a lot. I waited in line tonight to buy gas for the first time since the 70's. Im not totally crying the sky is falling yet but I am concerned trouble could spread.

I've been enjoying your posts, John. Three feet/three times faster would make a huge difference in lives saved.

Some great points.... while I am all in favor of restoring New Orleans, I only support it if they agree to make a lot of changes - straighten out their local politics, build better levees or build up the city like Galveston did, and have a PLAN... because there will be a next time.

My concern is this city is so big, how do you search every house in enough time to rescue even those barely alive? The only option is to break the city up into quadrants and go "roof to roof", banging on the attics to see if you get a response and marking the house as checked once done. But I don't think they have the people they need to do this - there's just too many houses.

It seems that Katrina isn't the only thing killing people over there:
Floating body Uptown 5 p.m.
Neighbors in the area near Hickory and Short streets Uptown said a body has been floating nearby in five feet of water since the unidentified man was shot five times on Monday.
Neighbors said the shooting was reported, but police and other officials apparently have been unable to respond.

they could have pre-planned and informed the public of locations of evacuation stations in each parish years ago, so people would know where to get on a bus if they lacked transportation)...and they had not much of a response ready when disaster finally struck. Shepherd Smith seemed pretty upset about that. I hope he's able to get some sleep. He's burned out.

Coast Guard is using helicopters to have someone check the houses for people in the attics -- showing it on WWL. Coast Guard has rescued well over 2,000 people so far from rooftops, etc.

I live near a national guard armory west of Houston. They were gearing up and leaving all day with all kinds of equipment including water tankers.

> This has nothing to do with gun rights, this has to do with a huge criminal element that exists in New Orleans proper. Most of these guys are probably drug addicts and if they haven't found drugs by now, will get even more violet as they start withdrawals.
Thus, why we hear of a children's hospital "under siege" by looters earlier today.

I too ask where's the leadership. I'm taking about also at the parish/county level and others. In the old days, even the most corrupt politicians had only one choice in matters like this, get out there and make sure everyone knew about it. Whether doing things like running a rescue boat, shooting it out with looters, or leading groups people to safety, they knew their political future depended on doing something when nobody else would. They would all try to outdo each other. Even though it's opportunistic and selfish, many people get help.
These days all the people get from their local politicians is corruption and incompetence.

That's because in a foreign country, the military is not constrained by the US Constitution. It's a 14 page document, if you read it some time you'll find out about states rights. I see. Maybe you can post that 14 page document where foreign countries have no rights.

St. Tammany announcements
A 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. parishwide curfew remains in effect for St. Tammany Parish.
Although water service in Covington has been restored, there have been problems with water pressure in some areas, city officials said. Residents should not drink the water unless it's boiled for at least 10 minutes.
More than 20 Red Cross disaster relief vehicles have arrived in St. Tammany and are dispersing bottled water and commodities in neighborhoods throughout the parish, officials said.
St. Tammany Parish officials are asking the heads of homeowners groups throughout the parish to contact the parish via the internet so officials can coordinate recovery efforts with the associations. The e-mail contact is Suzanne Parsons-Stymiest at
sparsons@stpgov.org Some 1,500 St. Tammany residents remain in shelters throughout the parish.

Jefferson Parish official Deano Bonnano on CNN with Aaron Brown. Bonnano blamed the lawlessness on the lack of National Guard troops to protect the citizens on the deployment of the NG to Iraq. Of course, scumbag Aaron Brown lapped it up.

"Ahh what has this to do with Shep asking those in charge where they should go?"
Exactly who did he ask? And where were they? And do you know what, I don't really care. If Shep is too stupid to figure out the answer to that question himself, than he is probably too stupid to understand the answer if he heard it. As I type this, Foxnews is showing a Salvation Army rescue center right next to I-10 where people are receiving water, food, medical attention, and being put on buses to shelters. Maybe Shep ought to watch his own newschannel if he's too stupid to figure out where people should go.
