President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.

Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

Most of those guys are the age of my son so they remind me of him and his friends.

Wow.

Pretty much exactly what I've been thinking, especially about the looters!

Thanks for the analysis!

We need to have some kind of a new "WPA" set up

What a great idea. Keep mentioning that. They need jobs, and there is plenty of work to be done. They will adjust far better if there is work for them to do.

"Um, yeah, I saw that dumptruck, too. It went to the Superdome, not the freeway"

No. It drove up the on ramp right below him and pulled onto the interstate he was standing on. But I don't think you understand that the same Interstate Shep is standing on leads directly to the Superdome. That is why the buses taking people to Houston drove right by him. Now think for a second. If the buses taking people from the Superdome to Houston are driving right by Shep on the way to Houston, do you really suppose the people around Shep can't find their way to the Superdome? Do you suppose they are somehow being blocked from walking to the Superdome. Tonight, Jeff Goldblatt described the effort to bus people from the Superdome as being very well organized, but he said some people don't want to go.

Look, if you sit and listen to Shep all day long, you will get the impression that he is stuck on an island with no exit. That is simply NOT the truth. He is not representing the whole picture. He is pulling a Geraldo and trying to make himself the story.

Not too bad here. Just called my gas station, and with my Honda it's not such a big deal. I'm more worried about the 40% jump in natural gas for home heating this winter and am trying to figure out what to do.

Prices at my station as of this minute (Iowa - don't want to name):

Ultimate $3.19 Regular $3.09 Silver $2.99

Your $35 was not too bad. I don't know if it gets good mpg or what it is exactly. Even $40 to fill my tank I can absorb, but when it gets up to $60 like my son paid, that is going to hurt a lot of people. He can afford it for now, was just grumbling.

"BOR—reporterette: they released the prsioners from the local jail, and those were the people looting." WRONG! the Superintendent of corrections (or whatever he is called) said those wrre not true, NO prisoners were released.

"The mike-in-your-face ambush journalism is bad-enough in Washington, but it has no place here at all."

Oh horse crap she was sent out there to give info and she gave nothing! There was a chance there to help instead there was nothing. If she was not at fault then her boss was. Damn it. Those in charge should have some kind of answer even if it is only let me get back to you when I get more info not just blathering like an idiot.

I don't have access to many good examples personally, so I'm always lamenting the way our young behave. My kids are still fairly young, so I have hope. But, hearing about your son and seeing fine examples like that young pilot and knowing of others is very encouraging. This country produces greatness. It produces bad stuff too, but the good ones are worth it all, aren't they?

People fail to realize that these looters are part of the criminal element that was already present in the city. Many areas around Rampart and such were dangerous to go into by day. They would actually mug people in the cemeteries.

Bless your heart, I'm praying for you!!! But how I thank God that you are all okay and ALIVE! I can't help but grieve for the families tonight who wonder if the loved one they can't find is among the "floating bodies" in New Orleans. What a horrible thing this is, I hate hurricanes. Praying for you!!! ((hugs))

I heard her long enough to hear her say that the government isn't doing enough right now and isn't ever going to do enough.

IMO, those reporters need to be rotated out of there.

Today in NE Ohio my husband didn't see a gas station selling unleaded for less than 3.10. Monday he could find it for 2.60.

Not much. That comment was in response to some whining that Shep shouldn't be asking the tough questions, shouldn't be pointing out some of the problems and lack of info.
