Human Events reports that the DNC and the Kerry campaign are writing to television stations, stating that the Swift Boat ads is is "false" and "libelous" and that "your station may not responsibly air this advertisement."
At least one of their points in the letter is an obvious lie: "The advertisement contains statements by men who purport to have served on Senator John Kerry's SWIFT [sic] boat in Vietnam and one statement by a man pretending to be the doctor who treated Senator Kerry for one of his injuries."
Horsepucky.
Every vet in the ad says, "I served with John Kerry," but not one of them claims to have been in his boat. Most of the men are other swiftboat captains. They've been open and clear in their statements that they served in other swift boats operating within 50 yards on Kerry's side, and their statements are their observations on serving alongside him, not under him.
NR's own Byron York had the scoop on Louis Letson, the doctor, months ago. The Kerry letter insists that Letson is a "phony" because he didn't sign Kerry's sick call sheet.
The Los Angeles Times looked at the who-signed-the-form controversy back in May:
"Meehan questioned Letson's role, saying a J.C. Carreon signed Kerry's medical report of the wound. "This gentleman is not the man who is on the report," he said.
Letson said that Carreon, a lower-ranked "hospitalman," was "present at the time and he, in fact, made the entry into Lt. Kerry's medical record."
Bad move, Team Kerry. The letter from the lawyers turns this into a bigger story, and the argument that these men are "phony" doesn't seem all that strong.
There are nine year olds in East LA that have been shot at more times than Kerry ever was during his four months in Vietnam. That doesn't mean they're qualified to be President.
Ah ... I'm really not looking forward to disliking anyone more than hated Clinton.
>> Letson said that Carreon, a lower-ranked "hospitalman," was "present at the time and he, in fact, made the entry into Lt. Kerry's medical record."
When I was in the Navy, during the Vietnam War and afterward, Hospital Corpsmen routinely made entries into medical records.
My fellow pugetopolis resident,
hopefully the strenuous denials by the Kerry kooks will draw the MSM to investigate. One can only hope. Hugh Hewitt is all over this.
I will say this - the Swifites better have their t's crossed and their i's dotted. If this turns out to be overhyped or false to any degree, Bush will suffer bigtime. To be honest, the way Kerry was flailing around lately, I'd rather this didn't come out at this juncture. Kerry was going down anyway, this might actually backfire and help him.
EVEN IF THE VETS ARE TAKING SOME LIBERTY WITH THE TRUTH WHICH I DOUBT, ITS OK FOR MICHAEL MOORE TO SPEW REAL BS AND GET AWARDS AND BE THE DARLING OF THE LEFT, BUT THE TRUTH HURTS DOESN'T IT?
Kerry is hinting at lawsuits to ALL who air this ad. This is intimidation usually slimly lawyers - so typical of liberals - stifle opinions and views legally. Hate crimes are another example of stifling opinions, beliefs and demanding tolerance while working on acceptance.
Let's see who backs off.
bump
I was impressed by the GM of a station in Wisconsin who called the Hannity show today to say they were running the ad and felt very confident Kerry made a mistake challenging the ad since it came with extensive affidavits and support documents.
Well to be fair, some of those 9 year olds are probably better with small arms than Kerry is so they are marginally better qualified.
Kerry's people will simply say that 'served with' means 'on his boat.'
The fact that they've been caught blatantly lying, in the process, certainly isn't going to play well in Boise, either. :)
Bad move on sKerry's part.
It could, but I doubt it. Not only that, but as one of the vets in the ads said, they've paid for the right to air this with blood. That's something very few of us can claim (including me).
It certainly takes the heat off the stations. How many TV stations see commercials that come with affidavits? Kerry's toast.
Clinton lied for 8 years plus and won 2 elections. Our knowledge and the public perceptions are 2 different things. People hear that Kerry's war service is being trashed, McCain is angry, Bush dirty trick, etc. I agree with Krauthammer - nothing good for the GOP/Bush will come out of this.
Democrats are censors at heart. Absolute proof of that is that they alway accuse Republicans of it. Their accusations ALWAYS reflect their own hearts.
sKerry may paint himself into an uncomfy corner here. If he tries to claim that Carreon, who was not a physician, was the one who treated him, that invalidates his first Purple Heart. Per military regulations, a Purple Heart requires that a non-lethal wound received from combat action with the enemy must be receive medical treatment, and such treatment is deemed to be that supplied by a physician, not a medic or hospital corpsman. Add sKerry's claim that a corpmen provided his medical treatment (removal of a superficial splinter, followed by application of antibacterial ointment and a bandaid) to the fact that there was no enemy action during his patrol (firing a grenade launcher onto rocks on shores does not qualify as enemy action) gives a total of two reasons for his first Purple Heart to be an invalid one.
We need to be able to see the 60+ pages of documentation that the vets sent along with the ad.
