Catholic Word of the Day: CATEGORICAL IMPERATIVE, 08-29-09
CatholicReference.net ^ | 08-29-09 | Fr. John Hardon's Modern Catholic Dictionary

Featured Term (selected at random):

CATEGORICAL IMPERATIVE

An absolute and unqualified command or prohibition of a law or of one's conscience in interpreting the law. Popularly associated with the Kantian theory of ethics, which centers on the principle "Act as if the maximum from which you act were to become through your will a universal law." It implies that, in the last analysis, each person's own will is the final legislator of what is morally right or wrong.

TOPICS: Apologetics; Catholic; History; Theology
KEYWORDS: catholic; catholiclist; heresy
**It implies that, in the last analysis, each person's own will is the final legislator of what is morally right or wrong.**

To me, this is heresy. God's will is the final word.

A definition I found.

Kantian ethics is another theory of "how one should act" however it differs from the utilitarian theory in a sense that it focuses more on the actual action and the morality of that action as opposed to the consequence of that action. This theory implies that as long as you act in a moral way then the consequences of your actions don't matter. Immoral actions include lying and using people as means to an end.

In my opinion, every action does have consequences, and we will have to answer to God for the people we led astray through our wrongful actions.

Anyone else?

I remember studying Kant and when we came to this imperative I thought:

Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.

The Golden Rule is similar, but the Categorical Imperative could be stated as,

“Do unto others as you would have others do unto everyone.”
