ONDON, Oct. 11 — Archaeologists excavating an ancient site in London said today that they had unearthed the oldest known plaque inscribed with the city's Roman name, a variant of Londinium.

"This is hugely important," said Francis Grew, curator of archaeology at the Museum of London. "It is the first real monumental inscription with the word Londinium on it. It is also visually the most important inscription we have even found in London."

The Italian marble plaque, found in Southwark at the junction of three key Roman roads, is dedicated to the Roman emperors and the god Mars from a London-based merchant, Tiberinius Celerianus.

Gary Brown of Pre-Construct Archaeology, which is carrying out the dig, said the plaque was found in a pit near the remains of two large Roman brick buildings. "The buildings could have been trading guild houses or even villas," he said.

Mr. Grew said the plaque probably dated from A.D. 50 to 150 and would have been placed prominently either on a building or in a shrine. He said the find helps give physical evidence of London's importance as a growing trade center then.

Well I've known for years that it was called Londinium. I've watched "Asterix in Britain", after all!

People interested in such things might enjoy an historical novel titled "London" by Edward Rutherford. In it he chronicles over 10,000 years years of history.

His other two books (unless I have missed more) are titled "Sarum" (about Salisbury, England) and "Russka" about Russia).

They are all over 1,000 pages, tedius, detailed and very good if you enjoy such literature and history.

I got interested in historical fiction by reading the four book series by Vilhelm Moberg, beginning with "The Emigrants."

That led to my reading most of James Michener's historical novels, followed by Leon Urris, Herman Wouk.

On my shelf for the future is a three book historical fiction series by Terry C. Johnston, about the early western US, fur trappers, etc.

My initial reaction was that they had added a new entry to the Periodic Table of the Elements. The only question I have is what Group/Period it will fit into.

I'll bet most people don't know that London has been in existance for that long. If you visit there you can still see parts of walls and other traces of the Romans, preserved right there in downtown London.

The Romans established it, and then the city became uninhabited, didn't it? And later reinhabited.
