LeShon Johnson, a former running back for the Green Bay Packers and Arizona Cardinals, was arrested as part of the largest FBI crackdown on dog fighting in the history of the bureau.
Johnson, 54, has been charged in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Oklahoma with violations of the dog fighting prohibitions of the federal Animal Welfare Act.
Specifically, Johnson is charged with possessing, selling, and transporting 190 pit bulls and other dogs similar to pit bulls for dog fighting. Federal authorities raided Johnson’s property and seized the 190 canines in October 2024.
“Animal abuse is cruel, depraved, and deserves severe punishment,” said Attorney General Pamela Bondi. “The Department of Justice will prosecute this case to the fullest extent of the law and will remain committed to protecting innocent animals from those who would do them harm.”
The Green Bay Packers drafted Johnson in the third round of the 1994 NFL Draft. He played in the NFL for five years, including stints with the Giants and Cardinals. In his career, he rushed for 955 yards and five touchdowns.
Johnson profited from the dog-fighting trade, which saw him run kennels under at least two names and supply and breed dogs for fighting rings nationwide.
“The FBI will not tolerate criminals that harm innocent animals for their twisted form of entertainment,” said FBI Director Kash Patel.
“The FBI views animal cruelty investigations as a precursor to larger, organized crime efforts, similar to trafficking and homicides. This is yet another push in the FBI’s crackdown of violent offenders harming our most innocent.”
If convicted, Johnson faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine on each count.

Don't these cretins have enough money?
If I were Queen of the World, serving time in the slammer would be the least of Johnson's worries.
Yeah, what is it with football players and dog fighting?
Of all the ghetto moves a man can make, this is in the top five. No mention of him killing off lamer dogs, yet.
He only had a 5 years career, and bounced around mostly bottom feeder teams. And it was all in the 90s. He didn’t make much money.
There’s either a lot of this going on or every NFL player who engages in dog fights gets caught.
Vick was the main reason I stopped buying anything from Nike after they signed him up to promote.
“190 pit bulls and other dogs similar to pit bulls for dog fighting.” I wonder how he would perform in a fight with a 190 pit bulls.
True. My old roommate was a 1984 10th round draftee and he got a $5k signing bonus and $60k per year plus incentives provided he made the team. He didn’t.
Animals work for us and provide meat. They are not to be abused. So says our Creator.
You can take the ‘homey’ out of the ‘hood, but you can’t take the ‘hood out of the ‘homey’.
Coulda bought a car wash...
Where did this guy play college ball, btw?
He probably does. That's part of the process.
Don't want to pour feed into a loser.
I abhor the idea of dog fighting and can think of no reason why people who participate should not be arrested. But, and here’s a really stupid question, why is it a Federal crime? I can find no provision in Article 1 that authorizes Congress to pass such a law.
First spring football practice in the books for 'excited' Vick
Setting up and enabling dog fighting is one of the lowest actions of “people.”
A past coworker had a rescue dog who had been a training victim for the other dogs in a betting ring.
Scarred section torn out of a place on his neck and down his back no longer could grow fur on it. Still afraid the first few months to join with the couple and their son unless they reassured him going to the backyard to play was safe.
When my wife’s sister’s gentle yellow lab dog was missing the cops said local ghetto kids (age 8-12 often) climbed snow drifts and jumped over fences to kidnap dogs and get money for them from the dog fighting trainers in Detroit where she was renting a college room in a residential neighborhood. Hers was never found.
Typically within three years of leaving the NFL, they are broke..............
I agree, except in their thinking it is strongly tied to organized crime, gambling (organized crime involvement), gangs and such, so I can see why they keep tabs on it.
Not with 5 baby mommas and 9 children.
Its the gangsta culture they all come from.
I ran a website for a time about the history of the Houston Oilers. One of the frequent e-mails we got was from women whose men claimed they used to play with the Oilers and she wanted to know if it was true. We had no way to know who might have been in training camp or got into preseason games but I would guess most of the guys were just lying.
