LeVar Burton got a glimpse into his lineage in “Finding Your Roots” and discovered something about his ancestors that shocked him.
The former “Reading Rainbow” host, freedom-to-read advocate and actor knew little about his lineage. He’d been estranged from his father, Levardis Robert Martyn Burton, since he was 11, and his mother, Erma Gene Christian, had been tight-lipped about her own history. Burton said it was “impossible” to get her to open-up about her upbringing.

I had ancestors on both sides of the war, one who died as a prisoner of war. Another was with Joe Johnston’s army when it surrendered.

I hate to break it to you, but that will never happen. If reparations are approved, your family line will have to pay again.
My ancestors weren’t even living in the U.S. at that time, and I will have to pay up, too.
I’ve never heard any serious discussions of who will have to pay reparations. I don’t even know how the government will distinguish between the taxes paid by blacks, Asians, Hispanics, whites, etc. They will all have to put their money in the tax bucket to be disbursed.

I did the DNA thing and found that my grandfather sowed some wild oats over the years and I have a bunch of cousins I didn’t know about.

All my ancestors were sinners. I presume my descendants will be also. There is no such thing as a pure family tree. Even Jesus was a descendant of King David and Moses, who both sinned.
Face it, Levar, the purity you yearn for is only found in God. The rest of us fall short and stand in need of redemption.

We are all, every one of us, descended from people we would cross the street to avoid, from slaves and slave holders, from criminals and saints. One might better pay concern for ones descendants rather than ones ancestors. Only one of those can you do anything about.
One of my white great grandmothers times X WAS a slave in MASS, 1637...
