Face Book has Disabled Free Republic's FB Forum
Sept. 4, 2022

Posted on 09/04/2022 9:21:00 PM PDT by PROCON

Hi there, I'm one of JimRob's FR FB Admins.

The Zuckholes just disabled our FR FB group.

FB is a democrat, communist organization.

I know many of you don't even use and actually shun and despise FB; actually Jim's main use for our FB forum is when the FR motherboard here goes down for some reason or another and we can gather there and get updates.

Anyway, our FB forum has been disabled, whether it will be re-enabled isn't known at this time.

Is Shelbyville next to Springfield?

Most of the online ones show the last address I lived at before going to Japan (1998).
There are 1 or 2 that show my address as my father’s when he passed away (I have never even heard of/seen that one).
Thankfully, I have not been able to find any with my current address (I check monthly).

This is exactly why I haven’t taken the test. If there wasn’t the publicly posting of the names, I would take the test now.

I don’t try to hide. No reason.

But the Turks are always probing around my email account for passwords. (I’m no fan of Erdoo) Had another one (phising attempt) yesterday, appeared to be from inside Germany.

Right click/copy on “from” email address and where it appears to originate. Not positive ID but likely region.

I use to belong, but I got kick off. I don’t really care because the board is all liberals. Guess it’s been about 7 years.

“I think we all need to get certified on HAM radio...”

Packet radio, specifically.
Encrypted.
Ultimately it may be the only way.

F-I-L was a big HAM; H7HIZ outta Coos Bay, OR

Died and left behind more stuff than he’d ever actually keyed up on. I’m into too many things, already, but kicking myself I didn’t keep his Yaesu VX-5 ,and get certed.

Probably not.

I don’t want the federal government to get involved.

I hope not many FReepers do.

It is pretty easy to get a license today.

Never saw a VX-5

Looked it up. 6 meters and UHF/VHF handheld.

Very small radio, am wondering about the 6 meter antenna issue. A 1/4 wave 6 meter antenna is 57” long (without loading coil)

Do you need one to buy and use the equipment?

It is against the law to operate a Ham radio without a license.

It is NOT like CB was.

There is no law that I am aware of that says you cannot buy a Ham radio. (Some people do in order to listen) Manufacturers of Ham radio equipment and reliable dealers will not sell you one if they know you are not licensed.

I got my first license in 1976. Was living in Western NM, drove to the FCC field office in Dallas, TX to take the exam. I failed the 13 WPM code test, but copied enough that they gave me credit for 5WPM and a Technicians license. I went back 3 months later and passed the code test and the Advanced license written exam. Once I had passed the exam I ordered a 550 Watt HF transceiver, it gave me time to get the equipment set up while I waited to receive the license in the mail. Had a understanding with an operator in my hometown in Texas that I would phone him when I received the license. He was my first contact. He is gone now, he was first licensed in 1929.

There are penalties for breaking the law, it is largely policed by Ham’s themselves. The FCC no longer gives the exams, it is done most often by local ham clubs. They are administered by approved volunteer examiners.

My advice? Find a local ham club, get a license. The breadth of equipment available and the number of facets to the hobby is so broad that you really do need advice when starting out. It is a friendly community.

Around that time period, I was thinking of being a ham.

I sucked at MC and hardly anyone was using it anyway.

Folks just used stuff bought from Japan to jabber back and forth, while the days of build/modify equipment was long gone.

Dayton in the spring was a BIG event for us Hoosiers.

Well, I spent many years doing what you said was long gone. I ran with people in NM who were some of the best engineers, techs and physicists in the world. We have a very active ham community. I built a lot of things from scratch and printed a lot of printed circuit boards. Still have the equipment to silk screen the boards and the photo equipment to create the masters. I also had a non photographic technique for making prototype boards.

Yup.. Never signed up for FB.
From the beginning there were warnings of how they invade your privacy.
If friends and family want to contact me they pick up the phone :)
Done and done.
