A New Jersey man who conspired with his then-girlfriend to cook up a feel-good story about a helpful homeless man and then used the lie to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars in donations online was sentenced in federal court Friday to more than two years in prison.
Mark D’Amico will also have to serve three years probation once he completes his 27-month term. He also must pay restitution and undergo gambling, drug and mental health counseling.

The homeless guy felt he didn’t get his fair share and squealed, IIRC.
Yes, a falling out among thieves.
But shouldn’t all three of them go to jail?
Yes. AsI understand it, the guy and his girlfriend got greedy and cheated their “homeless” partner out of his fair share. Had they not done that, he wouldn’t have complained and they wouldn’t have been caught.

The other two are awaiting sentencing.
Yet the Taliban get billion$ and nothing happens...
I think they should. They were all in on it. From the article:
“His former girlfriend, Katelyn McClure, and homeless veteran Johnny Bobbitt Jr. previously pleaded guilty to state and federal charges. Bobbitt was sentenced to five years’ probation on state charges in 2019. Both are scheduled to be sentenced on the federal charges this year.”
This was the first thing that soured me on GoFundMe.
The Canadian convoy was the final straw.
I wonder what percentage of all GoFundMe sob stories are simply money-spinning scams . . .
I’m gonna say about 85%…
GoFundMe is nothing more than an electronic panhandling platform. Anyone who donates money that way — in the absence of any formal legal recognition for a charity — has no reason to expect their contributions to be spent wisely.
Meanwhile I’m falling very short on my dogs vet bills while they got rich
I’ve gone the extra mile, offering to show the vet bills and even giving the hospital’s name and number for direct donations.
Only the evil seem to win nowadays.
Maybe I should have lied and said my dog was homeless.
:(.
I use GiveSendGo.
They’re Christian, non profit and only take small processing fees.
Donors can toss in extra to support GSG but they’re not required to.
GoEffMe is evil.
no charges for the girlfriend?
“I wonder what percentage of all GoFundMe sob stories are simply money-spinning scams . . .”
Good question. My guess is the Go Fund Me has selfish, greedy accounts 45%. An hour review of GFM accounts leads to the conclusion that some, maybe 45%, are boring, pointless and obviously selfish. “I need money to paint my car.”
Separating the mark from his buck in many cases keeps him from wasting it (by giving it to a politician for instance).
