Barr Assigns U.S. Attorney in Connecticut to Review Origins of Russia Inquiry
NY Times ^

Posted on 05/13/2019 5:21:42 PM PDT by springwater13

Attorney General William P. Barr has assigned the top federal prosecutor in Connecticut to examine the origins of the Russia investigation, according to two people familiar with the matter, a move that President Trump has long called for but that could anger law enforcement officials who insist that scrutiny of the Trump campaign was lawful.

John H. Durham, the United States attorney in Connecticut, has a history of serving as a special prosecutor investigating potential wrongdoing among national security officials, including the F.B.I.’s ties to a crime boss in Boston and accusations of C.I.A. abuses of detainees.

His inquiry is the third known investigation focused on the opening of an F.B.I. counterintelligence investigation during the 2016 presidential campaign into possible ties between Russia’s election interference and Trump associates.

The department’s inspector general, Michael E. Horowitz, is separately examining investigators’ use of wiretap applications and informants and whether any political bias against Mr. Trump influenced investigative decisions. And John W. Huber, the United States attorney in Utah, has been reviewing aspects of the Russia investigation. His findings have not been announced.

Additionally on Capitol Hill, Senator Lindsey Graham, Republican of South Carolina and chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, has said he, too, intends to review aspects of law enforcement’s work in the coming months. And Republicans conducted their own inquiries when they controlled the House, including publicizing details of the F.B.I.’s wiretap use.

Huber was a Scam by Rosenstein and Sessions to prevent increasing discussion of a Special Counsel to uncover Coup and Get Trump Operation.

Yup.

I remember it well. It was Nov. of 2017. There was increasing talk of a SC. So along came unnamed sources saying that Sessions had picked an unnamed person to investigate all the coup stuff. Several months later we find out that the guy's name is Huber and that the tasks that he was really assigned to wasn't all that much.

We don’t know Barr well enough or I’d agree.

I don’t care what anybody says, HE CLOSED the mueller investigation and the nonsense with it, didn’t give everything over that he didn’t have to to congress, gave them heck in front of the senate committee, and seems like the real deal.

Let’s give him a chance.

Mr. Durham has served as the interim U.S. Attorney since October 28, 2017, after U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions signed an order appointing him to the position. President Donald Trump nominated Mr. Durham...

Uh-oh.

Excellent. Between this and Barr not accepting the prior 3rd party inspection of the DNC computers - I’d say it’s a start!

I was actually a digital-only NYT subscriber until I saw this article. I hadn’t even finished it when I called and cancelled my subscription. The intricacies in how they are able to write something like this to support their narrative is actually rather impressive, but not something I need to be paying to support.

Far more. As much as I’m enjoying Barr, my anger over Sessions’ treasonous cowardice continues to mount as we see the contrast.

Is he authorized to use the powers of a grand jury or is he not?

This the problem. The authority of a US Attorney is defined by law and limited to their jurisdiction. This is why Special Prosecutors are used when such wide ranging authority is required, as they are not so limited. It would be enlightening to see Barr's letter to Durham, to see the scope and authority he is giving him, and if it includes some access or resources in DC and SDNY. Looking at his resume, it does seem Durham is the real deal, and a great choice for the job. Too bad we don't have someone like him in DC and SDNY...

"Does this mean that Barr is passing the buck to cover up, or that he’s serious about indicting all the wrongdoing we’ve known about for over two years?

--------------

"Known about" and indicting someone for a crime are two different things. As it should be.

Bill Barr has a lot of irons in the fire and would never lead the investigation himself. He will deligate that job with I suspect some close and periodic oversight. As a US Attorney he has many tools in his bag including forming a grand jury, authorizing investigations, issuing subpoenas to testify and petitioning courts for warrants of all kinds.

Based on the links posted here, this guy sounds like a tough customer and just what Barr needs in charge of this task. We'll see.

As I recall, the IG Report that recommend a criminal referral on Andrew McCabe was reviewed for a couple of months internally prior to public release. This new referral suggests the IG has completed the FISA inspection, and it’s bad for one or more high ranking Deep Staters.

We shall see.

John H. Durham is an excellent choice.

And i hope he has an excellent security team, because his life will be in danger.

I have every confidence that he will get the facts very straight, and will indict this cabal of seditious espionage agents weaponized by Obama aginst America.

The trail will be easy to follow, its well worn now by Judicial Watch, and parallel investigations.

Hmmmmm...connected to Whitey Bulger, of recent note. Seems there is a Trump Real Estate, LLC connection, too. Something to do with the construction union...

Yeah...hell will freeze over.

“Now they need early morning raids, email and wire taps, etc. etc. Give them the Michael Cohen and Roger Stone treatment. All of them.”

I agree. I would love to see Fox News outside of Comey’s door an hour before the feds come busting in. Watch the left’s little heads explode.

“Why do I feel Nothing will Happen!”

Many years of watching the Deep State operate and no action being taken against Democrats?

I believe some will be prosecuted, but sadly, they won’t be the chief criminals, like Hillary or Obama.

My guess is that they are going to lay it all on Comey as the scapegoat.

He’s been tasked with investigating along with his other work. He has not been given the powers of a special prosecutor. I don’t think this is a serious effort on Barr’s part.

Your analysis is excellent...thanks for posting.

.... but when the question of the initiation of the Russian investigation is considered, the standard will be entirely relaxed, it will be whether there was reason at all to investigate.

The initiation of the Russian investigation has two branches...use of "Spies" against George Papadopoulos and FISA spying on Carter Page.

The Papadopoulos branch may take years to prosecute due to involvement of allied governments and highly classified information.

However, the Carter Page branch should progress relatively quickly. The IG investigation has been on-going for over a year and should include criminal referrals. There is a paper trail, currently classified, that POTUS Trump will eventually declassify. Anyone who signed any of the FISA applications did so under penalty of perjury.

There is enough information in the public domain that shows crimes were committed. If this gross abuse of power is whitewashed, then this country is doomed.
