Career prosecutor John H. Durhams nomination to be Connecticuts U.S. Attorney got a favorable vote Thursday from the U.S. Senates judiciary committee on a day when Democrats spent hours excoriating other lawyers President Donald Trump has nominated for legal and judicial positions.
The committee sent Durhams nomination to the full Senate on a rare voice vote during a meeting at which most of the other 22 nominees squeaked through the Republican-controlled committee on partisan votes. Carl Tobias, a long-time judiciary watcher on the faculty of the University of Richmond law school, predicted that Durham will fly through the Senate, perhaps as early as next month.
Committee member and U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., interrupted a torrent of partisan criticism of Trump and his nominees when he singled out Durham for rare praise, calling him a tough, fair prosecutor who has had great success against drug gangs, organized crime and career criminals.
He knows what it is like to try some of the toughest cases against career criminals, Blumenthal said. He is exactly the type of person we should have in that role.

[WASHINGTON, DC] U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, applauded Judiciary Committee approval of John H. Durhams nomination to serve as U.S. Attorney for the District of Connecticut. Durhams nomination was approved by the Judiciary Committee today by voice vote, and now proceeds to the full Senate for consideration. Blumenthal and U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT) recommended Durhams nomination to President Trump last year.
I know John Durham well, having known and worked with him over many years, said Blumenthal. He is a no-nonsense, fierce, fair career prosecutor. He knows what it means to try some of the toughest cases against career criminals. He knows what it means to try to stop the opioid crisis in this country. He knows what organized crime does to the fabric of our society. He is exactly the kind of person we should have in this position.
