A Utah elementary school teacher apologized to one of her Catholic students Wednesday -- and may still face disciplinary action -- after she forced him to wash off the Ash Wednesday cross on his forehead, the boy’s family said.
William McLeod, a fourth grader at Valley View Elementary School, received the ash marking -- made in the shape of a cross and applied by a priest -- for the Catholic religious day that signals the start of the Lenten season and then went to school in Bountiful, Fox 13 reported. He told Fox 13 he was the only student who had ashes.
“A lot of students asked me what it is. I said, ‘I’m Catholic. It’s the first day of Lent. It's Ash Wednesday,’” William said.
William's teacher, who was not identified, later approached him and forced him to wash off the symbol, he said.
William reportedly attempted to explain why he wanted to keep the ash cross on his forehead, but he said his teacher wouldn't listen.
“She took me aside, and she said, ‘You have to take it off,’” William said.
“She gave me a disinfection wipe — whatever they are called — and she made me wipe it off.”

William’s grandmother, Karen Fisher, told Fox 13 she was “pretty upset” by the incident and received a call from the school’s principal and the teacher who ordered the cross to be washed off.
“I asked her if she read the Constitution with the First Amendment, and she said, ‘No,’” Fisher said.
Don't jump to conclusions. According to a recent census, LDS members account for only about 55-60% of the population. I'd say there's a pretty good chance that this pinhead teacher is most likely a transplant from one of the "tolerant" states on either coast, and is as likely to be a Druid as an LDS member.

I saw a senior citizen lady with an ash cross on her forehead yesterday and my first thought was she was too old for a face tat.
We have about 325,000 Catholics in Utah. We are about 8% of the population, higher than in some other states in the south). We have about 3,500 members of the Knights of Columbus here and are strong in our faith. Roughly 2/3 of the Catholics are Latino and they are generally wonderful people, with a strong, active faith. I love being a Catholic in Utah.
One of my best friends just finished his 6 years as Bishop of his Mormon ward. Yes, it is harder for kids than adults.

I know I was an adult the first time I ever saw ashes. I was shocked. I doubt she knows many Catholics in Utah.

This teacher is so very intolerant, that even after the boy explained what the significance of ashes on Ash Wednesday is she still couldn’t allow him to continue to keep this sign of his Catholic faith for a single day? This is hatred not stupidity. And saying “other religions will do the same” is an empty comment because this is a once a year practice. Government overreach at its worst - bullying a child.
