Dogs can read human emotions, study finds (only other species shown to be capable of this)
Telegraph ^ | 13 Jan 2016 | Sophie Jamieson

Dogs really are man's best friend, it seems, as researchers have shown they can recognise emotions in humans by combining information from different senses.

They are the only creatures outside of humans who have been observed to have that ability.

-SNIP-

"Our study shows that dogs have the ability to integrate two different sources of sensory information into a coherent perception of emotion in both humans and dogs.

"To do so requires a system of internal categorisation of emotional states. This cognitive ability has until now only been evidenced in primates and the capacity to do this across species only seen in humans."

Co-author Professor Daniel Mills, from the School of Life Sciences at the University of Lincoln, said: "It has been a long-standing debate whether dogs can recognise human emotions. Many dog owners report anecdotally that their pets seem highly sensitive to the moods of human family members.

"However, there is an important difference between associative behaviour, such as learning to respond appropriately to an angry voice, and recognising a range of very different cues that go together to indicate emotional arousal in another.

"Our findings are the first to show that dogs truly recognise emotions in humans and other dogs.

Dogs have masters.....Cats have slaves

BTW- Don’t sell horses short in being able to read your moods.

"I have ran two Rangers into the ground. My small dog wants nothing to do with my F150."

That one you see in the picture is 23 years old and has 258,000 miles on it. Runs great.

“I get so mad when hubby ‘fakes’ tossing Seven her toys.”

“I don’t trick my dogs.”

I’ve had three Australian Shepherds and they all understand the context of play time. When I throw or kick a ball, it becomes a challenge whether I can fake them out - they love it. I can’t fool them very often. I can chase them around the house or yard with some “threatening” object like a cap pistol or a vacuum cleaner, and they bark furiously all the while the butt nub is wiggling furiously. When I say, “OK, that’s enough, the game is over” it is like a switch has been thrown, they instantly mellow out and come up to be petted and lick my hands. Those dogs are masters of interpreting context, subtlety and human traits and emotions.

I wish I could find one of those government research gigs involving dogs.

What I can do with my dogs is one thing, what he does, is another.

He never had pets until he met me and is not very savvy about dogs or their body language.

He unwittingly takes things to the point of frustration rather than fun and with Dobermanns, that is not a very bright idea.

If I told you about the “games” I played with my Dobes, you’d either call me a liar or a lunatic.

Some were very complex, sophisticated “role playing” games, wherein the dog and I both had our “character” to play, if you will.

But that’s me and not Himself.

Many’s the time my mom would look out the kitchen window and freak out, because it *appeared* my Wonder Dobe had me treed, snapping and snarling while I screamed in fear.

She’d rush out, yelling and both the dog and I would stop and just stare at her, annoyed that she’d ruined our scene.

:)

That was a funny story about being tree’d.

Yes, I know about playing role reversal games. I’ll roll on the floor shrieking, with my arms and hands shielding my face so the ferocious attack dogs don’t lick me to death as they climb over me. Dogs are easily amused.

I wouldn’t be surprised if some expert “dog whisperer” criticized my confusing the dogs’ sense of dominance. Baloney, my dogs know who the Alpha is.

The Wonder Dobe of my youth invented a game wherein he became invisible.

With great melodrama, I humored him, searching everywhere and calling his name.

His nub would nearly fly off in smug joy, and eventually he’d erupt from his invisibility mode and knock me flat, with much face nuzzling and kissing, apparently overjoyed to be back on this plane, again.

It’s been 41 years and not a day goes by that I do not grieve his passing.

Few are fortunate enough to be blessed with a dog like him.

Ignore the “experts”.

You know your dog’s soul better than they.

:)

We have a cat who is totally tuned in to reading our faces to determine our moods, etc. It’s freaky, actually. The other cats don’t give a damn — just this one.

Without fail, as soon as I make the decision to head home, Seven will wake up from her nap and “assume the position”....her arms over the back of the sofa, watching out the window.

Sorry to disappoint you, but dogs are governed by the scientific rule that there is no such thing as ESP.

However, it may be only slightly less interesting that dogs do possess incredibly accurate internal clocks that rival their famous sense of smell in their incomprehensibility to humans.

You are your Seven's entire world. Her day revolves around you, and she knows quite well when to begin anticipating your arrival home. She prepares herself accordingly, and that's what seems freaky to you.

Try varying your departure from work by more than an hour or so one way or another, and you will find that she doesn't anticipate this.

Why do they keep doing these ‘studies’?

That used to be the purpose of science: To confirm or deny a theory or commonly observed phenomenon through experimentation.

These days, we just except something as fact if enough scientists agree that they believe it is true.

You should re-read what I wrote.

I have *no* predictable “routine”, whatsoever and I work at home.

*I* never know when I’m going to get bored with shopping and go home.

In that case, you'll want to know that there are many organizations offering enormous cash prizes for proof of such phenomena. The most famous of these is probably the Randi $1,000,000 paranormal challenge, but there is also a comprehensive list of other prizes here on Wikipedia.

Congratulations on your new found fortune. Make sure you spend it least some of it on toys and treats for Seven.

He will have foreseen that and be expecting them.

Your loss. A million bucks can buy a lot of tennis balls and dog treats.
