Dogs can read human emotions, study finds (only other species shown to be capable of this)
Telegraph ^ | 13 Jan 2016 | Sophie Jamieson

Dogs really are man's best friend, it seems, as researchers have shown they can recognise emotions in humans by combining information from different senses.

They are the only creatures outside of humans who have been observed to have that ability.

-SNIP-

"Our study shows that dogs have the ability to integrate two different sources of sensory information into a coherent perception of emotion in both humans and dogs.

"To do so requires a system of internal categorisation of emotional states. This cognitive ability has until now only been evidenced in primates and the capacity to do this across species only seen in humans."

Co-author Professor Daniel Mills, from the School of Life Sciences at the University of Lincoln, said: "It has been a long-standing debate whether dogs can recognise human emotions. Many dog owners report anecdotally that their pets seem highly sensitive to the moods of human family members.

"However, there is an important difference between associative behaviour, such as learning to respond appropriately to an angry voice, and recognising a range of very different cues that go together to indicate emotional arousal in another.

"Our findings are the first to show that dogs truly recognise emotions in humans and other dogs.

Awww I thought it was kinda ‘’trained’’ by the routine of DH coming home from work everyday, but then when he was in Houston, I eventually figured out what time he’d get here by when Lina would go to the window. It is weird. Like your pack, it’s not everybody, but Lina is Daddy’s girl.

Corvids are incredibly smart. They not only know how you feel they often seem to know what you’re thinking even when you’re not showing emotion.

:-) Oh, I know what you mean. LOL The looks they can give can be withering,
I bet there isn’t a Jewish mother alive that can induce guilt the way a dog can.

That’s a classic! Reminds me of my late German Shepard who endured several cone head periods in his life.

I trust my dogs judgements on people a whole lot better than I trust my own.
If my dogs don’t like the person after introductions, they are probably not worth spit.

That’s good therapy for you too.
If I didn’t have my boys and girls, I would have have burst a major vessel a long time ago.
They make me swear less to; when I am swearing, I am mad as hell and they don’t understand why.
They think it is directed at them, so I have to calm down and make nice to them.
keeps me from having a major coronary I guess.

Dogs can read human emotions,
Absolutely, without a doubt.

They had to do a study?

They also read minds (yes, I'm serious). They not only read body language they use body language AND facial expressions. They know when it's time to do something even when the clocks are changed.

But I had a Border Collie, she could do all that and more.

Hate to admit this, but when I’m out randomly shopping, I have no plan and no schedule.

It’s impossible for *me* anticipate when I’ll get home, let alone my dogs.

Basically, I just stay out until there’s nothing left open that I care about, and then I come home.

It’s even worse when hubby goes along.

His stores, my stores, both of us suddenly remembering we need something, on other the end of town from which we just came.

Random as all get out.

But she knows.

It tickles Himself when I hold the phone up for him, to show her stirring awake and assuming her watch position.

He’s not one for believing “odd things”, at all, but admits that it is pretty freaky.

He was not a critter person when I met him and I’ve always baffled him.

She barks at him and, bless his heart, he replies “You know I don’t speak Dog! What do you want?!?”.

Then she’ll turn to me, with that classic, exasperated female look, universal in both species, and I swear she rolls her eyes.

Then I get up and go do/get her what she wanted.

This also baffles him.

Poor guy.

:)

MY wife used to think it was fun to trick our dog. I warned her that the dog would never trust her if she did that.

Our dog has since passed and my wife to this day has deep regrets for teasing and tricking our dog.

I get so mad when hubby “fakes” tossing Seven her toys.

I don’t trick my dogs.

They trust me wholly and I’m honored by that.

Why do they keep doing these ‘studies’?
Just ask a dog owner, they coulda told them that.

LOL sigh What’s that like? Between Mia & Gypsy’s protracted illnesses, I haven’t been out for more than an hour in nearly 5 years. SilkenFest in March or April 2010. Soon as I can get past the spontaneous sobbing phase. . . (It makes people look at you funny).

I hate to shop. I have a list & get out of my way. (we have an issue here with large families who all shop together & they like to get in front of you & stand around. Women & men chattering, kids running amok. In espanol. And they’re large.) Meandering is for art shows, dog shows, & nature.

They learn. DH was actually a pushover & can be worse than me, spoiling the dogs- esp when it comes to staying outside with them so they can play longer.
It’s the only thing that saves him (devotion to the dogs)

LOL Lina’s easy. If she’s barking that one bark. . . bark. . .bark. . .it’s either something on a table (food) or that one of her toys has fallen off the couch/ bed or rolled under. We don’t know if she’s telling the object of her attention to Come here or wanting us to fetch it, but us fetching is usually what it comes to.

:-) That’s some form of intuition. Mia (& Gypsy, too) only had to get a little antsy or give a look & I usually knew if it was water, food, or potty. Not really rocket science. I guess we’re just real tuned in to them.

LOL They do! They do roll their eyes. And hmph! And the occasional non verbal cuss word.
