Calling Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trumpâs stance on the topic âdisqualifying,â Kentucky U.S. Sen. Rand Paul said on CBSâs âFace the Nationâ Sunday that he opposed government surveillance at mosques and establishing databases to track Muslims.
âYes we should follow people who are a risk,â Paul said. âShould we talk to their neighbors and friends, should we talk to their imam? Sure, all of that is legitimate, but should we target mosques and have a database of Muslims?
âAbsolutely not, and I think thatâs disqualifying for both Donald Trump and Marco Rubio to say that weâre going to close down every place that potentially has a discussion that might lead to extremism. That would require some sort of religious czar that I think isnât consistent with our freedom.â
Trump raised both policies on the campaign trail and television interviews this week in light of terrorist attacks carried out by Islamic State militants in Paris that left 130 dead Nov. 13.
On Thursday, Florida U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio said during an appearance on Fox News that any place âwhere radicals are being inspiredâ should be shuttered.
Paul, polling 10th in the GOP presidential field according to an average by Real Clear Politics, also touched on a bill he filed to halt new U.S. visas for citizens of countries with jihadist movements.
That follows calls from Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell for President Barack Obamaâs administration to âpauseâ the resettlement of Syrian refugees in the U.S. and reexamine the procedure.
Paul pointed to a pair of Iraqi refugees who were arrested in Bowling Green on terrorism charges in 2011 and the 2013 Boston Marathon

That they were.
FURP.
Now I feel better.
Never trust a rules-based libertarian.
It’s this crap that keeps libertarians from becoming Libertarians.
One of the minimum functions of government is
to defend the nation from within and without.
Anything less isn’t more freedom, it is merely suicide.
While I don’t believe in willy-nilly monitoring of Citizens I do think that if there is evidence of any institution or individual religious or otherwise that is preaching and plotting violence such as Jihad they authorities should be able to acquire warrants for wiretapping and monitoring and if they are public places of worship there is no reason why the police can not attend services of course. That said Trump never said he was for creating a carte blanche Muslim database nor carte blanche monitoring of Mosques. There are already databases for all refugees and immigrants Muslim and otherwise so nothing that Trump is for is out of the ordinary. The only thing amiss is the media which as always tries to create a controversy where there is none and it will benefit Trump. Muslims are not like previous immigrants those that believe they are just don’t understand Islam. Not all Muslims may be radicalized but the vast majority of Muslims have every intent to dominate the cultures they immigrate into. Its part of the fabric of their religion.
Rand Paul On Shutdown: "Even Though It Appeared I Was Participating In It, It Was A Dumb Idea"I said throughout the whole battle that shutting down the government was a dumb idea. Even though it did appear as if I was participating in it, I said it was a dumb idea. And the reason I voted for it, though, is that it's a conundrum. Here's the conundrum. We have a $17 trillion debt and people at home tell me you can't give the president a blank check. We just can't keep raising the debt ceiling without conditions. So unconditionally raising the debt ceiling, nobody at home wants me to vote for that and I can't vote for that. But the conundrum is if I don't we do approach these deadlines. So there is an impasse. In 2011, though, we had this impasse and the president did negotiate. We got the sequester. If we were to extend the sequester from discretionary spending to all the entitlements we would actually fix our problem within a few years.[Posted on 11/19/2013 12:16:51 PM by Third Person]
Rand Paul: Time for GOP to soften war stance...by softening its edge on some volatile social issues and altering its image as the party always seemingly "eager to go to war... We do need to expand the party and grow the party and that does mean that we don't always all agree on every issue" ... the party needs to become more welcoming to individuals who disagree with basic Republican doctrine on emotional social issues such as gay marriage... "We're going to have to be a little hands off on some of these issues ... and get people into the party," Paul said.[Posted on 01/31/2013 5:08:50 PM PST by xzins]
Rand Paul's immigration speech...The Republican Party must embrace more legal immigration.[Posted on 03/19/2013 7:04:07 AM PDT by Perdogg]
Unfortunately, like many of the major debates in Washington, immigration has become a stalemate-where both sides are imprisoned by their own rhetoric or attachment to sacred cows that prevent the possibility of a balanced solution.
Immigration Reform will not occur until Conservative Republicans, like myself, become part of the solution. I am here today to begin that conversation.
Let's start that conversation by acknowledging we aren't going to deport 12 million illegal immigrants.
If you wish to work, if you wish to live and work in America, then we will find a place for you...
This is where prudence, compassion and thrift all point us toward the same goal: bringing these workers out of the shadows and into being taxpaying members of society.
Imagine 12 million people who are already here coming out of the shadows to become new taxpayers.12 million more people assimilating into society. 12 million more people being productive contributors.
Rand Paul calls on conservatives to embrace immigration reformLatinos, should be a natural constituency for the party, Paul argued, but "Republicans have pushed them away with harsh rhetoric over immigration." ...he would create a bipartisan panel to determine how many visas should be granted for workers already in the United States and those who might follow... [and the buried lead] "Imagine 12 million people who are already here coming out of the shadows to become new taxpayers...[Posted on 04/21/2013 1:52:42 PM PDT by SoConPubbie]

Rand Slams Congress for Funding Egypt's Generals: 'How Does Your Conscience Feel Now?'Sen. Rand Paul is hammering his fellow senators for keeping billions in financial aid flowing to Egypt's military -- even as Cairo's security forces massacre anti-government activists. We should enact a new section of the RICO statute that says that if a mosque is found to be sanctioning terrorism, that it must be razed!
What’s the problem?
Rules-basing, or libertarian?
Outlaw Islam and it won’t be an issue.
Rand is an islamist facilitator.
It's this crap that turned this Libertarian into a libertarian.
If mosques are being used to facilitate terrorism, we HAVE TO KNOW!
It’s just silly to pretend otherwise.
F you Paul-ette.... take your Libertarian , American endangering retarded crap and shove it where the sun don’t shine

Wow! Even through with the hubbub here, I can actually hear RP’s rating dropping even faster!
Liz Mair, John Kasich et al, Rand Paul, Obama, Hitlery, NYT... Thanks Republican Wildcat.
This is a dumb argument. Churches and synagogues should also be monitored if evidence shows they are used to plan illegal activity or to indoctrinate members to commit crimes.
Any establisment that does that should be monitored
Yep he should have dropped out last June!!!
Anything they do to Muslims, they will do ten times worse to Christians. People are ignorant to forget this.
And I am sure we will all be comfortable living as Muslims or as dhimmis (second class citizens) under Sharia law... or dead. Your new Muslim overlords do not offer many choices.
If ignorant people fail to remember the fact that Islam is out to conquer and dominate, per the Koran, they will.
