Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Robert Papp said that in 2010 Obama told U.S. military leaders to accept his push for gays in the military, and that if they didn't, they could take the "opportunity to resign [their] commissions."
Papp said these things in a video BuzzFeed obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request.
The video shows a speech Papp delivered to Coast Guard Academy cadets during which he was asked how he would deal with enforcing an order with which he didn't agree. He used the story of his 2010 meeting with Obama as an example of how service members' duties can be compelling and conflicting with personal desires....

People in the military have been looking the other way for 25 years. They only got tossed if they were extremely blatant about it.
Reporting it would get you in trouble.
Eh, that guy looks like something out of fantasy world...the kind of fantasy world where folks who advocate gals on the front lines exist, or who think Iraq is equivalent to Pusan or Tet.
Sodomy worship is a cruel master.
Puke. You are a relativist. Embrace the fail in everything, as there will be no end to it.
Homos are nothing but trouble.
What is surprising is that none of these so-called leaders had the courage of their convictions and resigned. Sad commentary on our military leadership.
Retaliation is the claim in many workplace lawsuits. In this case, freedom of religion may enter into it also.
The comparison is not valid. Can you imagine the political firestorm if all of the JCS resigned because they believed this policy would hurt the operational effectiveness of the military? Obama would have retreated from this red line as he has so many others. The only way to stand up to a bully is to call his bluff.
Thanks for posting this 2DVet.

At issue: Accept a moral and social evil or lose your career. Man, that's a tough call. Plenty of comments so far arguing on how that is possible and how you could still uphold the higher standards.
Plenty more that argue that these Pentagon pushovers have no more moral integrity than Bill Clinton in a room full of interns
What do you think? What would you do?

Not the same. If a large number of military leaders had resigned in protest, it would have sent a loud message to Obama and the country. It may or may not have changed Obama’s mind.
In the situation you describe, in fact a large number of republicans DID stay home or vote for another candidate in 2012. What was the result?
We got Obama. That outcome was a guaranteed outcome of that protest.
Thanks.
Now, there's a solution to the problem.
You are welcome. Someone had to stand on the principles others abandoned. Sadly we were few.
And it ain’t about making Barry change course. It’s about making AMERICA’s reactions to Barry change course.
If there was such evidence, do you think it would be made public? And was anyone or anything really being harmed by the previous policy of "Don't ask, don't tell" or the one before that of a complete ban on gays in the military? Shouldn't the real measure be the operational effectiveness of the military and not some social agenda?
As someone who has also served, I can see real problems occurring between those who are straight and those who are openly gay. It is a divisive issue, especially in the kinds of circumstances that the military presents in terms of a close, working environment. The same obtains in the introduction of women into ground combat units. Even our elite political masters and social engineers cannot dictate human biologic behavior.
You are right, and to be honest it highlights the problem I have with the current GOP.
I am being asked to compromise my deeply held beliefs in order to make people who HATE those beliefs like me. Yet they are NEVER asked to compromise their beliefs.
The other side is playing for keeps, and the GOP is playing for prestige.
You don't keep the "ship righted" by violating your oath to defend the Constitution.
Agreed, but you don’t want to give the keys to the kingdom away in one fell swoop either.
Good Grief man, your radical leftist is still a player in GOP politics and may even run again.
It is time for you to quit supporting him.
