Is Free Republic worth saving?

Posted on 08/30/2013 9:01:53 PM PDT by The Bat Ladys Husband

My involvement with Free Republic began around 2000 when my wife began her vigil around the Texas governor’s mansion in support of GW against the challenge of Al Gore for the presidency. I generally provided the livelihood for the Bat Lady to be able to protest and surround the mansion against the leftists who were kept at bay across the street. While she was registered in order to post after action reports I was a lurker on the site.

Over the years we have attended rallies and protests and meetings. Other groups of freepers nationwide also held rallies, attended protests, and held vigils- activities that were organized and coordinated through the Free Republic site. After action reports were posted almost daily, report after report from across the country from different freepers describing their activities. Even the term "freeper" came to mean one who actively engaged the left to fight against disinformation. We considered ourselves patriots. While we did not risk our “lives, fortune or sacred honor”, we suffered the slings and arrows of a hostile left in the cause of freedom.

With a few exceptions, the “freeper” of today is merely a couch potato who is content to amuse himself by making snide comments and repartees about current news. Few even support the site monetarily. Free Republic appears to barely be able to keep its head above water and its so-called member freepers are such a non-factor of dissent that unlike in the early year, Rush Limbaugh rarely references the site (although he seldom mentioned it).

Early freeper were the ones who got up off the couch, made their signs and used the leftist tactics of street activism against the left itself. Michelle Malkin, Ann Coulter, and Jonas Goldberg are example of early famous freepers, but Free Republic also had the likes of Basil (Second Amendment Sisters), True black man, Jimmy Valentine’s Brother, Kristin, the entire DC freeper contingent and so many other activists making a difference for conservative causes.

At some point in time, a subgroup, “The Pajama Patrol” arose within Free Republic. What a sad day that was. The mindset of Free Republic turned to the couch potato mentality referred to earlier.

The most current after action report I have seen was my wife’s, The Bat Lady’s report on the May 2013 Tax Day protest. One of the protesters with us was a 90-year-old lady with her handmade sign. If she can do it, why can’t you?

All you new Freepers need to get up off your butt and get out and make a difference. Where are you at the Impeach Obama overpass events? Why aren’t you organizing anti-Syria bombing protest? Why aren’t you marching over Benghazi, the NSA, the IRS or ObamaCare? If you are there why aren’t you posting your reports to inspire and motivate others? You are not the only reader of FR in your city. Find the others and get together. Act in concert. After 13 years, the Bat Lady and I are still in contact with those we met on the front lines.

DC Freepers maintained vigils at VP Gore's house, and prevented code pink from vilifying our troops at Walter Reed every week for years. Freepers once actively protested the left and got Clinton impeached. Some even say we were the Paul Revere of the TEA party,

Is your barcalounger so dear or American Idol so sweet as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it Almighty God.

It is time for freepers to rededicate themselves to the vision that Jim Robinson created. All the clever comments you attach to the threads are less than useless. It is time once again to become a large thorn in the side of those who do not strive for the American Ideal and be the activists we once were. If you cannot post an after action report “go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. …May posterity forget that ye were our countrymen.”

“It does not take a majority to prevail ... but rather an irate, tireless minority, keen on setting brushfires of freedom in the minds of men.” Samuel Adams

In answer to my own question: yes it is worth saving if its members make a difference.

I don’t care to start a PayPal account. And the point is how many people are being booted from contributing, like me.

> I call you a dink.

The overwhelming magnitude of your tremendous intellectual prowess, as manifested by your cunning ability to call someone a nickname for a penis, just has me in freakin' stitches.

You're a hoot and a half.

Get your lame shiite together, dude, and figure out how to make your contribution succeed. Thousands of the rest of us do it, many like in my case, every month, without a problem. That's your first clue.

A couple tips from a long-ago PF sufferer who finally beat it:

1) Icing your heel can be a challenge. Buy a bag or two of frozen peas (the cheap store brand). Molds to your foot. Seems to be just the right temperature too, without using anything between the bag and foot. When you’re done, throw ‘em back in the freezer and they’re ready for next time. I’d suggest NOT eating them when you’re all done with this process. :-)

2) Put a golf ball on a hard (tile, linoleum) floor. Sit in a chair, take your shoe and sock off, and roll the hind part of your foot around on the golf ball, as hard and for as long as you can stand. This hurts so good (!) and breaks up scar tissue on the pulled fascia.

Okay, 3 tips:

3) Never, never again buy crappy running shoes, or wear your shoes too long. But you probably already know that one.

Did you notice my post where I told you it won’t take my credit card? Do you understand this might be part of their problem?

No, but who did you direct your post to?

I note you are now switching from mumbling in the rug about site fundraising activities and how you think it could be done better to trying to whitewash the situation and make us think you 'tried' to donate but the evil gremlins prevented you from doing so. So you want to offer Free Republic your free opinion as to how to make things all better..

Now, I can believe server overloads, and all sorts of strange glitches, but I'm really sure that if you retry your efforts you will be able to navigate past whatever bottleneck it was you bumped into on Algore's invention here and be successful at completing your donation. Assuming your card is valid...

If the system has just taken a dislike to one person from Minnesota (that would be you, since I did note that there have been donations successfully received from your state so it is not a continuous insurmountable issue) and you really want to end this FReepathon, you can write a check, get a money order, use PayPal... In other words, you can get it done if you want to. My resident keeper of all things FReepathonish is in bed, but if you really need a mailing address for your offered donation that you say you were prevented from making electronically, I'm sure one of the FReepathon team would gladly supply it to you. Maybe even as a reply to this post.

So break out that checkbook, an envelope, a stamp, and sit tight. You will be blessed with the address..

By the way, it just got cheaper for you to end this FReepathon. Now all you need is to pony up $1.2k...

> I don’t care to start a PayPal account.

That's your option, of course.

> And the point is how many people are being booted from contributing, like me.

Gee, I dunno. How many have complained about it? Not many that I'm aware of.

And it's not like people around here are afraid to complain... look at how they react when the pages load funny from time to time, or the internet speed is a little slow, or the posts double up. My God you'd think the sky was falling.

So my guess is that if potential contributors were being blocked on any kind of regular basis by the kind of problem you describe, we -- and Jim in particular -- would be hearing about it in freakin' spades. So far I'm unaware of anything of that sort.

No, and I didn't spell it "sciite", I spelled it "shiite". Please pay better attention.

I meant to write "shiite". It's slightly more polite than "shit" and carries they additional humorous connection to some of our less savory and out-of-favor Middle Eastern neighbors. It's a common usage around here, or haven't you noticed?
