Watching football with about every player trimmed out in pink, from their shoe laces to their chin guards, I wonder, "Does prostate cancer have a month?" They do. It's September, but I don't recall any baby blue ribbons or TV adds with celebrities alerting me to that fact. Please don't misunderstand me, I do not mean to take anything away from the commendable efforts by the NFL, other organizations, and common people in their pursuit to rid the world of this devastating disease.
However, I did some research and discovered that there didn't appear to be any statistical significance to justify these levels of increased exposure of breast cancer.
I don't know what the federal funding levels are for each and I absolutely don't know all the other facts and figures. I'm sure there are many freepers that will educate me.
I'd like to know what your honest opinion is as to why breast cancer receives more attention. I am not saying it isn't fair. Educating people about breast cancer does not make people less educated about prostate cancer. This is not a zero sum gain. If anything, the efforts made for breast cancer are likely paving the way for progress with many other forms and we should all be thankful. The question, however, is, "how did it become this way?"
Are women simply better champions of their cause? Are men somehow less vocal about these things by nature? Does this discrepancy have something to do with the statistics, diagnosis, or treatment of which I'm unaware?
hahahahaha funniest movie ever, especially any scene with Ethel Merman. “Sylvesterrrrrr.....” “If you must know, they grabbed me right beside the road.”
yah...we had this discussion last year when the NFL did this.
What I want to know is whether this campaign is designed to “raise awareness” of breast cancer, or if it is designed to raise money to actually reduce breast cancer.
In either case, there is a lot of money tied up in making all of these cute pink accessories that these teams are sporting, and I still wonder just who gets all that money.
And before anyone flames me for my insensitivity, I am a two time survivor of two very serious non-breast cancers, and the subsequent treatments and many reconstructive surgeries.
So when do we start putting everything in brown to commemorate Prostate Cancer?
I agree with you 100% and so does my wife, a ten year breast cancer survivor.
Designed to raise money, whether or not that money is to reduce breast cancer... MDA headquarters are in Tucson, I worked near the building when they were building it (actually I worked in the building they left), one thing I learned for sure: charity is big business.
I agree, I’m sick of seeing all the pink trimmings on the football players today. If they want to promote the pink thing then have all the cheerleaders wear pink and dressed as scantily clad as possible then have the play cameras pan to them after each football play.......That would get my approval and I wouldn’t have any objection to the pink thing.
Likely simple a matter of the fact that most social services and health related committees have a disproportionate amount of females. That also seems to run true of voluteer groups. This is just from my 20 years of personal experience - not necessarily backed by statistics. This might mean that there just isn’t the leadership energy to get a comparable awareness movement started.
Sounds like you are concerned. Why not organize a group to kick off a similar campaign for prostate cancer awareness.
You just described the late, lamented XFL. ("He Hate Me.")
Breasts are more inspirational.
Why do we need this? I thought that the government was going to do all the research now with zero care. So now we need to donate to the government?
I had 7 half brothers and sisters. The youngest of them was 14 when I was born. There is only one of them left. Five of the six already gone died of cancer of one form or another.
My mother died of cancer. My father of emphysema.
I am going to die one day, when God is ready for me. Although I do hope to go quickly, cancer may take its time. I want no chemo or crying.
Death, in my humble opinion, is the end of this test. I just pray for passing grades, not only for me, but for all of us who love God. He is ever forgiving us isn’t He.
As far as all the hoopla about cancer .... follow the money.
I love the movie. It is in my top five of all comedies.
Two greats: Milton Berle and Terry Thomas in the most hilarious movie ever. And not one vulgar word, no naked bodies, just pure fun with the funniest people the Good Lord ever assembled in one place.
Oh, and Terry Thomas worked at “Vandenberg, you know, the missile place - hush, hush!” Love that line, as Mr. Inspectorette and I worked at Vandenberg for 20+ years.
I did Titan II and Minuteman training there as well as a FOT&E Minuteman launch. Not a bad place.
No man should be wearing pink-period.
My father in law is a breast cancer survivor.. so is my mother. I refuse to donate anything to that so called ‘charity’. I am sick of seeing the pink everywhere.
Am tired of the ribbon and all else that 'the pink' markets. The amount of pink now visible - that translates as 'cancer' is over the top. I see 'Company trucks' and so much more; now painted pink 'for the cause'.
Personally, think, if the very word 'cancer' was dropped from the airwaves for a year or two; if it's 'advertising' went silent altogether; the number of cases would drop. It is inserted way too often, into our public consciousness and creates not just 'awareness' but fear, which in turn, can invite 'the thing in itself'.
We 'get the message' 24/7 and can only say,'enough'!
Very insightful. I tend to agree, with reservations. I would never want to imply that someone with cancer had brought it on himself. I think it has more to do with the body's immune system. I believe that cancer can live in one's body for decades, doing no harm, and then, because of a stressful situation, it gains a foothold and spreads. The fear you mention could be the kind of stress that could actually help to activate dormant cancer cells.
It should be the other way around, considering that both contraceptive pills and abortion have been linked to breast cancer.
