New U.S. claims for unemployment benefits rose more than expected last week, according to a government report on Thursday that suggested hiring in August was steady but not robust.
Meanwhile, the Labor Department says the Consumer Price Index rose 0.5 percent in July, following a drop of 0.2 percent in June. Gas prices accounted for much of the swing. Prices increased by a seasonally adjusted 4.7 percent, after falling sharply in June.
The core index, which excludes volatile food and energy, rose 0.2 percent. That's below the 0.3 percent rise in each of the previous two months.
Prices are 3.6 percent higher than they were a year ago, matching the 12-month increase in May and June. Core prices are 1.8 percent higher than they were a year earlier, the largest increase in two years.
Meanwhile, initial claims for state unemployment benefits increased 9,000 to a seasonally adjusted 408,000, the Labor Department said.

It’s another Unexpected Thursday....
????
Vote for Obama, things could be worse.
Wrecking ball SOB. Our side better turn UP the rhetoric stating flatly how he is single-handedly destroying the country with help from the Senate.
Santelli was awesome this morning.
Love that guy.
“Inflation Rise More Than Expected”
Seriously? As much money as they’ve printed??
The best thing we can do for the economy now is to talk about “higher taxes,” deflate our currency like a third rate Caribbean banana republic, vilinize corporations and the successful, take on massive debt and bring into question our ability to ever repay them (that’ll make people more readily lend us money in the future)...
Poor Obama has simply had some “bad luck.” Besides, he's only had three years of which the first two had a Democrat House and Senate to fix the mess Bush left him. No worries though, the world loves us now. We're on the level most others are at!
I read somewhere that if the phony calculators were using the same methods that were used during the regime of the last master of disaster (jimmah cahtuh) the current inflation rate would be around 15%.
More proof, as if any were needed with this bunch, that figures don’t lie but liars can sure figure.
“excluding food and energy”
Well yeah, who needs those?
There is no other statement possible that so clearly illustrates the pure corruption that resides inside the beltway. This level of corruption has infected the “processional politicians” and “public servants” of all political stripes!
Proof of statement?
All those reading this post - please raise your hand if you can live for 30 days without using any power (electricity, natural gas, coal, or gasoline).
All those reading this post - please raise your hand if you can live for 30 days without eating (and drinking) anything.
If you can not live without it for 30 days it needs to be counted as part of inflation.
But then, doing something like this would be telling the whole truth - a rare commodity that is in short supply when it comes to “professional politicians and public servants”.
He'll tell us all about it in September (after his vacation in Martha's Vinyard).
“Its another Unexpected” term has been outed. The term “more than expected” is now being utilized. Which acknowledges the expected unexpected bad news expected from this government
Wait until they start cutting the Defense budget! That is, if they count unemployed military, defense contractors, or defense industry workers. They don’t count gas and food in inflation.
Revised up? You don't say! Unexpected.
That is like saying, "The core index of my being excludes breathing and eating."
The Department of How Can We Fool Them Today has been working overtime.
Again...when does the unexpected become expected?
Along similar lines of deep thought, today just so happens to be my un-birthday! O, happy me!
