Senator: No Kagan hearings without Clinton files

WASHINGTON – The top Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee warned Monday that he would seek to slow Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan's path to confirmation unless senators get full access to her files as a Clinton administration aide.

"We're heading to what could be a train wreck," Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama said. "I don't believe that this committee can go forward with an adequate hearing" without all records from Kagan's tenure as a White House counsel and then domestic policy adviser to President Bill Clinton.

Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., the Judiciary Committee chairman, last week set hearings to begin on June 28. Sessions said Republicans would ask for a delay unless senators get access to the tens of thousands of pages of Clinton-era records by then.

Sessions doesn't have a veto over the hearing schedule, but his threat set the stage for a potential partisan showdown over the documents and the pace of Kagan's confirmation process.

I want the Republican senators to filibuster this communist.

Kagan was Associate Counsel to the President in 1996 when Hillary was subpoenaed. During that time period Hillary was forced to testify before a federal grand jury relating to the Whitewater controversy.

Alfonse D’Amato, began hearings on Whitewater and on Foster’s suicide during Kagan’s tenure also. I would bet there was some interesting correspondence.

Jan. 4, 1996 (Kagan’s tenure) Hillary Clinton’s billing records from the Rose Law Firm are found on a table in the White House residence book room after two years.

I was responding to the poster who sounded like it was Hillary’s files being requested. I was just trying to clarify whether they realized it was Kagan’s. Maybe they did, but that wasn’t clear to me from the post.

I know the Senators don’t care about dredging up Hillary’s old troubles...they are on KAGAN’S trail. Anything else would be a sideshow...

Will also bet that anything relating to Hillary or Bill’s personal legal troubles would be excluded or redacted...

You most likely are right. However, she would have to have submitted a legal opinion on a lot of questionable White House maneuvers. It seems if she was deliberately withholding files, stonewalling by using questionable legal tactics, and/or a host of possible other things it should be fair game for these hearings.

A lot of strange things happen during her tenure and the vast majority of Republicans that were politically active during that time still think there was a huge cover-up and questionable legal maneuvering. Sideshow or not, in my opinion they should examine the evidence now that they have the opportunity.

How about Obama showing us his first. LOL

I’m all for papers, lots and lots of papers. And there’s plenty that haven’t seen the light of day.

Kagan should be a firm not from the get go. This is our Bork. She’s not qualified to sit on the SCOTUS, any more than this Kenyan is qualified to sit in the White House.

Heck, a number of his appointments couldn’t even pay their taxes until they were ready to be sworn in (or there-abouts).

This situation is dangerous, and just disgusting to boot.

“...Thank goodness that someone had the guts to stand up ...”

This will only work if the Repubs stand together and scream “NO F*CKING WAY!” ala the Dems and Robert Bork.

And good luck with that...Snowe and Collins will fold like the French Army watching the Germans marching towards Paris.

We can do NOTHING cohesive so long as these RINOs and others like them are part of the picture. They are liberals through and through - and therefore, part of the problem.

True. I just wish GWB could have put just one more solid conservative on the bench. He couldn’t, though. Ginsberg just wouldn’t do the honorable thing and drop dead. (Yes, I know that is a dreadful thing to say. As she is an America hating leftist, she deserves it.)

Now be nice. It didn't have to be darth vader ginsburg. It could have been any of the leftists!

When we have a republican president I pray for the leftist justices the same as I pray for obama. Psalm 109:8-9.

And I pray protection over the conservative members so that obama doesn't try assassinating one (or more) of them. I put no evil act beyond the kenyan.

I wonder how the media can spin opacity as a virture?

Thank goodness that someone had the guts to stand up to this rushed attempt to confirm.

He'll cave like they always do.
