After a lifetime of public service and a painful illness, Jack Kemp has died.

Our prayers are with his family.

Interesting tidbit about then President Bush being irked about Kemp going off on tangents.

I think it had to do more with Bush maybe not understanding it, and why the Bushes wound up doing more damage to the Republican Party name, than Kemp ever could have done.

He brought new ideas to the American political system and we’re better off for it.

Yes it is. And it can be cured, with the right approach.

Even the Huffington Post is treating him nicely.

Darn....I met Mr. Kemp in ‘96 and got to chat with him for about ten minutes. That time keeps replaying in my head right now.

Jack Kemp started out in football, then got involved with Ronald Reagan.

Kemp also considered Christian faith relevant to “politics.”

For me at times, he seemed a bit liberal, but I think he had a positive vision of conservative ideas for everyone.

I have good memories of Jack Kemp.

Kemp was one of my first political heroes. I wanted to see him run for president in 1988 rather than Bush Sr. But he was always cheerful (too cheerful sometimes when confronting evil) and a terrific speaker.

Another of the greats of conservatism has left us. Meanwhile Ted Kennedy still lives.

I am very sorry to hear this. Prayers being sent for his family.

I wonder if somehow Dole could have won — if maybe Drudge could have found out about Monica a few months earlier? — if Jack Kemp could have ever been our President?

Wish we had more supply siders like him around today.

What a wonderful story. I love finding out that someone famous took the time like that.

P.S. Don’t ask Pres Obama anything and expect him to get back to you...

One of the best of the Buffalo Bills. One fo the best this country has to offer.

Jack Kemp pulled no punches when it came to the war in Kosovo.

In his view on Kosovo: “world peace cannot rest on American threats of violence, bombs at midnight or the bully tactics of President Clinton.”

RIP—he will be missed.

Yeah, the press had to come up with something negative to say. They couldn't let the passing of a great conservative like Kemp go by without degrading him in some way. Actually, I would take it as a compliment since Bush 41 was the anti-Reagan.

I remember in 1984 Firing Line did a debate on the subject "Should Ronald Reagan be reelected". One of the debaters for the pro side was Jack Kemp. One of the debaters for the anti side was Jessie Jackson. Kemp was simply in another league than anyone else, WFB included. He annihilated Jackson. When Jackson spoke, Kemp aggressively took notes, then hammered away, point by point, rending Jackson's statement totally crushed into dust.

Unfortunately, that was not the Jack Kemp who showed up to debate Algore in 1996. I don't think Kemp's heart was in that run.

Yes, he would have been a great running mate for Reagan, and after that 1984 debate, I was a huge fan. I really wanted George H. W. Bush to pick Kemp as his running mate. I understand Bush not wanting to have such a strong personality on the ticket, but I think the Republican party would be much stronger today had Kemp been VP in the 1988 election. He would have been able to balance Poppy Bush's foreign policy expertise with his own domestic policy skills, and probably would have prevented Clinton's election in 1992.

I wish he had not been sick, as we really need someone who can champion free market conservatism today.

He will be missed.

Me too. Kemp was the architect of the real “Compassionate Conservatism”, and not that farce that W turned it into.

Kemp walked the walk, while the head of HUD, he would go into the inner cities, and talk to the residents there about why liberal policies failed.
