Where’s Michael Steele? If he’s really a conservative, then this is his first test to prove it!

-- In order for the minority party to retain their right to filibuster, at least ONE member of the minority party MUST vote for the majority's bill. --

That's false. If you are determined that it is true, I defy you to find and cite authority for the proposition. Here are links where you would find the rule, if it existed: Link to Senate Rules and Link to Riddicks Senate Procedure.

Sometimes (and this is one of those times) a procedural vote is tantamount to a substantive vote. If this amendment failed to obtain cloture, then it would be stuck in infinite debate mode. If Corker wanted debate to continue, he would not have voted to limit debate with voting on a budget point of order or passage of the amendment to start around noon Tuesday.

The power to move to reconsider a vote does attach to those on the prevailing side of the vote, and there have been many motions to reconsider FAILED cloture motions (sort of stupid to do so, since cloture motions are free anyway (i.e., can have a hundred of them on the same subject, f Senate leadership wants to), a do-over is the same as have a fresh vote), but there is no sense whatsoever to having a revote on a motion to limit debate. Senate Rules XXII itself describes how debate can be extended beyond the 30 hours post cloture. But in The instant case, the Senate has unanimous agreement that post cloture time is up, notwithstanding the clock, at noon tomorrow.

When they pass this pork bill, it will not work and they will be back for more, and more, and more.

When the value of the dollar bottoms out at Zero, the people that voted for Zero will realize what a horror he is/was, but it will be to late to stop the civil war.

According to the official Senate website, Corker did not vote for cloture. The issue is thus moot.

They only need a simple majority tomorrow. This was the crucial vote.

Your info is not correct on a simple majority because this bill raises the deficit and cannot be passed on a majority vote.

“Democrats hold a 58-41 majority in the Senate, but 60 votes are needed for passage of the bill because it would raise the federal deficit by spending.” Example from one site and below is a link to another example.

The issue as it pertains to Corker's vote is moot, but the general case isn't. You've expounded a general rule, that a Senator has to vote with the prevailing side (in this case, in a cloture vote) in order to retain the right to filibuster. I assert that this is false. The right to object to taking a vote at a time certain is inherent to being a Senator, and in no way depends on having voted one way or the other. There are ways to circumvent the power of objecting to vote, cloture being one, but unless cloture is invoked (or the subject is one that by law is subjected to limited debate). debate continues indefinitely.

re: A voice of reason. That is exactly what they do — Corker was the person for the GOP Senators.)))

So, this vote by Corker was so that he can filibuster? Afraid I am ignorant of this procedural thing and would love some detail.

I think it deserves a separate thread with some cooler discussion. I don't blame the FRs for outrage at what seems to be indicated by this vote.

“It is apparent that you did not bother to read this thread or you would know they always pick someone to vote with the other side in case it has to come back up.”

I do not understand this. Can you explain?

Rush said today that his sources tell him that calls are running hundreds to one against the bill. If the admin is pointing to a poll, they probably paid for it.

Right, Dems are in the majority because they are electing DINO’s...in congress and the Senate...fielding a suitable candidate for the state. As Reagan said...he’d rather have an elected official who votes with him 75% of the time than against him 100% of the time...was there ever a finer senator than Rick Santorum?...PA tossed him out. You play the hand you are dealt...if all RINO’s go, the GOP will become a mostly Southern regional party; how is that good for anyone?...it will be a miracle if a Repubs take Voinivich’s seat.

Public prefers ‘worn out ideas’ like tax cuts to pork spending
The public is just not getting the message if Rasmussen’s most recent poll can be believed.

A whopping 62% of respondents think that the stimulus bill needs more tax cuts and less wasteful spending:

With the Senate poised to vote Tuesday on an $827-billion version of the economic recovery plan, 62% of U.S. voters want the plan to include more tax cuts and less government spending.

Just 14% would like to move in the opposite direction with more government spending and fewer tax cuts, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey. Twenty percent (20%) would be happy to pass it pretty much as is, and five percent (5%) are not sure.

Republicans and unaffiliated voters overwhelmingly want to see more tax cuts and less government spending. Democrats are more evenly divided: 42% agree with the Republicans, 32% want to pass the plan as is, and 22% would like to see more government spending and fewer tax cuts.

Most conservative and moderate voters want to see more tax cuts. A plurality of liberals say the plan should be passed pretty much as it is.

Unfortunately, they are not going to get their wish. Obama and the Democrats have rejected sensible, targeted tax cuts in favor of a pork-laden monstrosity that few think will work to stimulate anything except donations to the Democratic party.
