I need some positive reasons why not to plan for a SHTF scenario.

I am seriously thinking of taking to steps to go to a survivalist approach planning to survuve total chaos and financial and institutional break down. Some one please help me see why this is not going to happen. Thanks

Collapse isn't going to happen overnight if it happens at all. And they are not going to seize 401k's without a lot of politicking and fighting. This is still a democracy. I posted the following on another thread and it bears remembering:

National turnout in this election was only 53% (which is 122,842,626 voters). So Obama was elected by just 27% of registered voters. That leaves about 73% of registered voters either opposed to him or completely uninspired. His risk is on the downside.

He is not going to just be able to waltz in and get what he wants. More likely, given his inexperience, he will be used by many seeking their own gain, and he will be forced into decisions he never considered. We see that already in his advisor picks, people who have been forced upon him by the monied interests. Obama and Hillary have no say in the matter - the money behind them is calling the shots, as always.

So there is a lot between now and doomsday. Plenty of time yet to actually take the cash from your retirement fund. At least that's my opinion; yours is your call.

I would highly recommend West Virginia, for the primary reason that if you and say about 10,000 other patriots were to move here (getting a great deal on housing prices and cost of living by the way), we could seriously reinforce the two-party system here. Last week, we missed getting two Republicans (obviously non-incumbent) selected to statewide office by only 5,000 and 7,000 votes out of 700,000. These positions were Attorney General and Supreme Court. You can see how little it would take to have made a major statement to go along with the third straight vote for the Republican presidential candidate.

Most of the Democrats here (except for those who win legislative seats) are conservative, and are the kind of people you'd love to be around. We don't have any big cities with all those problems, just 1.8 million people that have already learned how to deal with adversity. Plus the hunters would go wild since we are overridden with deer and other wildlife. In fact, the hunting is so good that the surrounding Indian nations decided about 1680 to make present-day WV off-limits for residence but available to all.

This is not a SHTF mode, this is a normal mode for responsible living.... It's just that large segments of our society has never been taught it, forgotten it, or does not want to be responsible for themselves.

We've been working on off the grid living for years

Can you elaborate?

We have bucking saws to cut wood for heat and cooking. We also have clay for ovens.
We have a well and a hand pump for water.
We know how to make soap for us and to barter.
We have bees for honey, barter, and candles.
We grow a years worth of veggies each year (with heirloom seeds). We can, dry and freeze. If there's no canning lids or freezers, we can make vinegar from our apple tress and pickle.
We planted fruit trees, berry bushes, and strawberries.
We know all the edible and medicinal weeds in our area.
We have sheep for meat, wool and barter (plus I knit).
We have a compost toilet out back as an outhouse.
My husband is a hunter and trapper. That means meat and fur (we've learned how the Indians tanned their hides).
Even better? Our neighbors do the same things, just in case someone in the area missed something.

It's kind of a sinking feeling when they don't tell you to "take off your tinfoil hat," but instead get kinda serious and want to discuss the matter at hand.

But then, like you said, it IS good to be scared and on your toes. And I've been feeling a lot more self-assured and reliant lately, and have taken pride in it.

Propane. A bottle like that will last 5 or 6 nights.
If the bottle runs out I have the adapter to refill it.

I don’t necessarily have them for anything long term, but notably get alot of power outages where I’m at. So they are quick and convenient during an outage.

We have several...along with the oil for them and they are good for light.

I also have a ammish double action hand pump for my well...just need the sucker rod installed to be able to use it for water, and since it will hold 22 lbs pressure, I can even use it to pump up my pressure tank and have low pressure water in the house for extended periods in an emergency. We have our own septic field as well.

But, in order to keep your food frozen (unless it is winter in Idaho where ours can keep for several months in that time of year without) you need electricity for that food. That requires either solar, wind, or generator power. For the latter, you need fuel to keep it going as necessary.

Most of our food storage does not require freezing for that reason.

Canned goods are always a good starting point. Lay in a 6 to 12 month supply that you could live on if worse comes to worse. Most veggies are packed in water so that's a bonus. You can use them in the meanwhile and rotate stock. Dried goods such as pasta is good too, but you'll need water to cook.

If it's a truly end of the world scenario then that's good because Christ will return soon after. If it's a economic blip then be sure and plan for longer.
