If you're rural, or maybe even suburban, a good reference book is "The Encyclopedia of Country Living."
The woman who wrote it lost her husband and was left with kids. She had nothing, and had to live on nothing. She learned how to live with no money and from total scratch. She even saved her chicken feathers (I don't remember how she got the chickens right now) to make quilts for her kids. That's how informative her book is.
