We've been working on off the grid living for years

Can you elaborate?

We have bucking saws to cut wood for heat and cooking. We also have clay for ovens.
We have a well and a hand pump for water.
We know how to make soap for us and to barter.
We have bees for honey, barter, and candles.
We grow a years worth of veggies each year (with heirloom seeds). We can, dry and freeze. If there's no canning lids or freezers, we can make vinegar from our apple tress and pickle.
We planted fruit trees, berry bushes, and strawberries.
We know all the edible and medicinal weeds in our area.
We have sheep for meat, wool and barter (plus I knit).
We have a compost toilet out back as an outhouse.
My husband is a hunter and trapper. That means meat and fur (we've learned how the Indians tanned their hides).
Even better? Our neighbors do the same things, just in case someone in the area missed something.

I just recently saw the movie “Cold Mountain” for the first time, (I know, I'm probably the last person on Earth to have seen it,) and the current “chill” in the air keeps calling to mind snippets and situations of that ugly and seemingly senseless time gone by...in thought that that “time gone by” may not have “gone by” for good. I know it was just a movie...but the portayal was real, and brutal, and mostly unforeseen. Nicole Kidman and Renee Zelwegger really rose to the ugly occasion. It's a reminder of self-sufficientcy and inner, unrealized, God-given strength.
