:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Calculating the Risks in Pakistan

A small group of U.S. military experts and intelligence officials convened in Washington for a classified war game last year, exploring strategies for securing Pakistan's nuclear arsenal if the country's political institutions and military safeguards began to fall apart.

The secret exercise — conducted without official sponsorship from any government agency, apparently due to the sensitivity of its subject — was one of several such games the U.S. government has conducted in recent years examining various options and scenarios for Pakistan's nuclear weapons: How many troops might be required for a military intervention in Pakistan? Could Pakistani nuclear bunkers be isolated by saturating the surrounding areas with tens of thousands of high-powered mines, dropped from the air and packed with anti-tank and anti-personnel munitions? Or might such a move only worsen the security of Pakistan's arsenal?

Algerians possessing bin Laden speeches arrested
3rd December 2007

Four people in possession of cassettes containing speeches by Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden were arrested on the northwest coast of Algeria, police said today.

Police seized 15 video cassettes, 60 CDs and 222 audio cassettes with information “defending terrorism and incorporating the speeches of Osama bin Laden and images of terrorist operations downloaded off the Internet”, according to the police source.

They were charged with crimes including supporting terrorism and held in custody, police said. The four members of the group ranged in ages from 27 to 35, and collected intelligence for the commander of the Houmat Eddaaoua Essalafia (HDS) group, an organisation active in the centre of the country, according to the police.

The western Algeria-based HDS is a splinter group formed from the Armed Islamic Group (GIA), which was dismantled by authorities in January 2005. The four arrested comprise part of HDS logistical support group and spread propaganda to recruit young people, according to the police.

Blast in Madrasa Where Mulla Omar Had Stayed in Past
December, 03, 2007

At least six persons are reported to have been killed in a powerful explosion at the Imdadul Uloom madrasa near the Afghan border at village Qila Saifullah, about 150km (90 miles) from Quetta in Balochistan on December 3,2007.

An Afghan refugee had stayed in a room in the madrasa on the night of December 2,2007. After he left on the morning of December 3,2007, the madrasa authorities noticed that he had left behind a bundle. When they opened it, there was an explosion.

It is learnt that Mulla Mohammad Omar, the Amir of the Neo Taliban, and the late Mulla Dadullah, the Neo Taliban Commander, who was killed by the Americans in May last in Afghan territory, had stayed in the madrasa in the past. Police sources claim that many of the leaders of the Neo Taliban had been frequently visiting Qila Saifullah.

They suspect that the blast must have been the work of American or Afghan intelligence or both.Further details are awaited. About 75,000 Muslims from all over the world attended a convention of the Tablighi Jamaat at Qila Saifullah in August last.

Calgary man loses $20K after eBay sale hijacked
CBC News ^ | December 3, 2007
Posted on 12/03/2007 12:09:48 PM PST by george76
RCMP investigator says eBay trying to hide scam problem.

A Calgary man is one of 1,000 Canadians who have been scammed on eBay through a tactic known as hijacking, and the RCMP says the online auction service is not co-operating with their criminal investigations.

Shaqir Duraj, a Calgary bakery owner, won an eBay auction for a car in early October. He thought he was dealing with a reputable seller with a 98 per cent customer satisfaction rating.

When Duraj complained to eBay, the company wrote him a letter saying someone had temporarily taken over, or hijacked, the seller’s page, and that he would have to contact police and the FBI.

About 1,000 Canadians have reported being victims of a similar scam since 2000...

Robertson said eBay is trying to hide the problem and has not returned any of his phone calls.

“They don’t want to share this intelligence,” he said. “I don’t think it will be in the best interest of eBay to say that X number of Canadian consumers have been the victim of a fraud.”

Coalition Forces Disrupt Terrorist Operations, Detain Seven

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Dec. 3, 2007 – Coalition forces detained seven suspects during operations today to disrupt al Qaeda operations in Tarmiyah, Iraq.
During one operation, coalition forces captured a wanted individual believed to be an associate of an al Qaeda in Iraq senior leader involved in the northern belt terrorist network. Coalition forces approached the target building and called for the occupants to come out. The ground force detained five suspected terrorists, including the wanted individual, who identified himself to coalition forces. Upon securing the area, they found a machine gun and pistol.

In other operations south of Tarmiyah, coalition forces captured another wanted individual believed to be involved in al Qaeda in Iraq’s media and propaganda networks. Coalition forces detained one other suspect, in addition to the wanted individual, without incident.

“We continue to make progress, but there will be difficult times ahead as we work towards the day when innocent civilians can go about their lives without worrying about terrorist attacks,” said Navy Cmdr. Scott Rye, a Multinational Force Iraq spokesman.

In other recent Iraq operations:

— Multinational Division Baghdad troops arrested seven individuals believed to have terrorist ties in southern Baghdad on Dec. 1. The 2nd Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, and 4-64th Combined Arms Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, both attached to 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, initially detained the suspects after getting positive identifications from area residents and Iraqi security volunteers.

— Coalition forces killed one terrorist and detained 16 suspected terrorists during operations Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 to disrupt al Qaeda operations in the central and northern parts of Iraq. Those detained include an individual believed to be responsible for facilitating funds in the southern belt terrorist network and an alleged recruiter for a suicide attack cell.

— Iraqi police from the Nasiriyah special weapons and tactics team detained a suspected high-level improvised-explosive-device facilitator during operations Nov. 30 to disrupt extremist networks operating in the area. The suspect is reported to be an extremist company commander and the primary facilitator for an IED network that is responsible for multiple IED attacks against Iraqi security forces and coalition forces. When captured, the suspect had Iranian weapons and munitions in his possession, including an Iranian rocket-propelled-grenade launcher, three new Iranian-made RPG rockets and boosters, several AK-47 assault rifles and ammunition. Four other individuals were detained by SWAT for further questioning.

— Coalition forces captured two suspected criminals Nov. 30 during operations in the Kadhimyah and Shaab areas, near Baghdad. Intelligence reports indicate the captured suspect in the Kadhmiyah area was a weapons facilitator for “special groups” criminal elements. The second suspect was reportedly a special groups weapons facilitator and distributor who transported weapons from Baghdad to Diyala province.

— Multinational Division Baghdad troops arrested a suspected terrorist bomb maker and two financiers and found two improvised explosive devices in the Iraqi capital’s Rashid district Nov. 30.

Precision Coalition Strike Kills Several Militants in Afghanistan

American Forces Press Service

BAGRAM AIR BASE, Afghanistan, Dec. 3, 2007 – Several militants were killed during a coalition operation yesterday targeting Taliban command-and-control networks in Afghanistan’s Helmand province.

Coalition forces conducted a precision-guided munitions strike targeting a senior Taliban commander believed to be involved in the March kidnapping of Italian journalist Daniele Mastrogiacomo, his interpreter and his driver. Reports indicate the individual also is responsible for a number of mortar attacks on coalition bases, as well as several improvised-explosive-device attacks.

During the course of operations, coalition forces targeted a vehicle in the Musa Qaleh district containing five men, one of whom intelligence reports indicated to be a senior Taliban commander. A supporting aircraft released a precision-guided munition, destroying the vehicle and killing the occupants.

There were no immediate indications of injuries or deaths to civilians not taking part in hostilities.

“Coalition forces are systematically destroying the Taliban’s command and control over their extremist networks,” said Army Maj. Chris Belcher, a Combined Joint Task Force 82 spokesman.

(From a Combined Joint Task Force 82 news release.)

“’Christian groups in PA to disappear’”
By ETGAR LEFKOVITS

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “”The systematic persecution of Christian Arabs living in Palestinian areas is being met with nearly total silence by the international community, human rights activists, the media and NGOs,” said Justus Reid Weiner, an international human rights lawyer in an address at the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs, where he serves as a scholar in residence.

He cited Muslim harassment and persecution as the main cause of the “acute human rights crisis” facing Christian Arabs, and predicted that unless governments or institutions step in to remedy the situation - such as with job opportunities - there will be no more Christian communities living in the Palestinians territories within 15 years, with only a few Western Christians and top clergymen left in the area.

“Christian leaders are being forced to abandon their followers to the forces of radical Islam,” Weiner said.”
