June 25, 2006 -- A Brooklyn anesthesiologist callously ditched his wife and three kids, leaving them homeless after he secretly sold their house and fled the country with all their money, the wife alleges. Dr. Raihan Chowdhury was deemed a fugitive Wednesday for ignoring repeated court orders to provide for his hapless family.

His wife, Sharmin Sultana, who gave up her career as a gynecologist to become a full-time mom, is now broke and staying at a women's shelter with the couple's two daughters and toddler son.

All while her husband lives in luxury in his native Bangladesh, possibly having remarried without getting a divorce here, according to her divorce documents and her lawyer's statements in Brooklyn Family Court.

" The husband had also quietly quit his $280,000-a-year job at the hospital "

Wondering why health care is so expensive?

Also, where in the article does it say they are Muslim?

It doesn't explicitly say that, but when even Mahatma Gandhi couldn't work out a way to live with møøslimbs, he divided the country into India for the Hindus, and East and West Pakistan for the møøselimbs.

East Pakistan became Bangladesh.

They're from Bangladesh.

Couldn't happen in Florida.

actually... I know someone that happened to in clearwater. her husband got a 2nd mortgage without telling her... and yes, both on the deed, and then defaulted on the 2nd mortgage. lender pushed it into foreclosure and my friend was forced to leave her house. technically, the lender should never have given the loan with only one signature, but with a million dollar home, she didn't see to mind. the courts have been dragging their feet and she has lost all her savings trying to deal with it. by dragging their feet, i mean over 1 year. the husband has been ignoring the courts, and the courts don't seem to mind.

In Oklahoma it is joint property even if the other spouse is not on the deed -- in fact here at closing the spouse is added to the deed even if they are not on the mortgage.

You're right. The law says she wins, but the courts don't necessarily follow the law.

I know I'm not supposed to talk to you, but this is just too much. I read the whole article and the choice that hubby gave this woman was life in the U.S. or "a life of luxury" in a hellhole. Which amounts to what? A three room mud hut with two chamber pots?

Also, did you skip the part where he threatened to keep the kids and "send her packing", and when she looked in her purse, discovered that her husband had taken the money, passports, and credit cards? So what you are saying is that this is a sound form of "outrageous decision making".

I try not to get too worked up over the bitter divorced guys here, and there are a couple on this thread. I was 19 yrs. old when my first husband abandoned me and my two babies. Moaning and groaning about it would be so low class. I got a job and a new life. I almost got a bed in a shelter, too.
Another woman in the same situation helped me and I didn't have to suffer that humiliation. And that's just what it is...guys get to be drunks in bars, crying in their beer, and jilted wives get a bunk in a feminist prison camp with the frightened screeching babies.

Very simply, there is right and there is wrong. If you can point out one single thing that this man did right, I will depart the field. Use any standard you want. What good or right or decent or fair thing did this man do for his wife and three small children?

p.s. Not to get personal, but are you a divorced man who got left with nothing? Because if you are, then at least we have that in common.

Bangladesh is over 10% Hindu. And do you really think Chowdhury is a Muslim name? Learn to connect the dots dude, your life will depend on it sooner than you would like to think.

According to the article, she would need to study for a few months and take the boards to get licensed here. Assuming she can support herself and the kids in the meantime, that sounds do-able.

LOL! I'm a woman, on first...and last..hubby. Hey, this is a terrible story. If I gave the impression I was sticking up for the husband, I apologize. Absolutely not. I was just trying to tell the poster that it wasn't a case of this guy just abandoning the woman. There is a huge culture difference with how we think and the way they think. By the way, the notion that there is no nice living in Bangladesh is ridiculous. This guy went there with what looks to be close to a million dollars. I doubt he's living in a mud hut.

BTW, remind me why you're not supposed to talk to me...there are so many of you out there I just lose track! :) Hey, lighten up, IT'S SUNDAY!!!!

Ummm, actually Ethiopian food is pretty good.

They make their spongy flat bread from a grain called teff. It is very tasty, much better than wheat or corn. If it made a good loaf bread, we'd probably have abandoned wheat like we've abandoned spelt and emmer.

Or Oklahoma -- both spouses have to sign the paperwork!

Has the law changed in the last 5 years? (that's how long I've been retired.)

Back when I was closing Ok loans, the only time both spouses had to sign the docs was when both their incomes were used in qualifying for the mortgage. I closed quite a few Ok loans where the spouse who wasn't used in qualifying for the loan signed no documents at all.

In Texas and in Florida the non-qualifying spouse has to sign the Deed of Trust/Mortgage. I had to stop several Tx. closings after reviewing low income housing files because the applicant would state he was single but then the tax returns would indicate he was married. So, since he was claiming married even if common-law, she still had to sign the DOT.

Yeah: women in our society have the same rights as men in a Muslim society. America is a gynocracy.
