UNITED 93 FReeper Reviews
self | April 28, 2006 | RobFromGa

Posted on 04/28/2006 1:21:50 PM PDT by RobFromGa

Just saw United 93-- I thought it was excellent. It evolves in real-time and its cuts back and forth between the Air Traffic controllers, the Military room, and the plane.

It was somewhat shocking to watch the level of confusion in terms of what was going on, but when you see what information that they were dealing with, it makes sense.

The hijackers to me came across more as fanatical than evil, and they were not turban-wearing obvious characters, they were cleaned up and I ride on planes with people like them on every flight I take.

In the movie, they are carrying out the plans of others and are obsessive in their task. We are not fighting an enemy that is likely to be reasoned with.

There is one character that I'm glad they included- he has a European *maybe French* accent and he makes a number of comments along the lines of "If we do what they say, they'll spare our lives"-- typical appeasement mentality.

Thanks to this group of heroes, many thousands of lives may have been spared and we kept the Islamic nuts from claiming the Capitol or White House as a prize.

I give in 9.5/10!

Auntie Mame .. I just got back from watching United93
You were right .. I'd advise not to even bother getting the popcorn .. I bought the small and I didn't even touch

Also .. I totally agree that this movie should be seen by EVERYONE!

It's not gory like it was reported in the media ..

They do show the stabbings .. but movie producer didn't show long details of it ..

Though the movie is VERY intense

When the movie ended ... the entire theater was completely silent .. other then some sniffing .. there wasn't a sound

I did really good throughout the movie .. I was afraid I would start crying

I guess itwas because the movie has you on the edge of your seat .. even though I knew how it ended

I did however, after getting in my car before heading home .. take a couple of deep breaths .. and then the tears came

NEVER FORGET!!

I am watching a special on the Nat Geographic channel on Terrorism and 9/11. It reminds me all over again how islam is institutionalized psychopathology. When embraced fully, islam is the pinnacle of human evil.

I'm still getting conservative friends of mine to actually READ the Qu'ran and Hadith for themselves, and see the evil in front of them

Rob what was the reaction to those viewing it with you?

At the end of the movie there was complete silence

When you see it .. you'll know what I mean

When Flight 93 accelerated down the runway I found myself doing my normal takeoff routine.

I did the same thing. Lately I say a quick prayer and go back to sleep during the take-off and I found I was crossing myself in the theatre.

Felt different because my theatre seat was way more comfortable and roomy than an airliner seat!

Incredible how the cinematic techiques made one feel as if one was there, and not just watching.

The movie is great. Some complain that it is not artsy enough and characters not established, but I like it, because it is not about one particular person, its about Americans fighting with terrorists and effect of this movie is like nothing else. You have to see it.

I liked the lack of character development of the passengers. It was more realistic. We know the names: Beamer, Bingham, CeeCee, etc., from after the fact. These people were not known to eachother, maybe never knew eachother's names.

Watching the movie you aren't sure who's who among the passengers (you pretty much do know the flight crew). The man saying "tell my wife I love her & the boys" was probably Beamer, man talking to his mother probably was Bingham. You get only snippets of these gut wrenching last conversations, "my will is in...", "I love you...","the combination to the safe is...","tell my brother...".

The Discovery channel did the whole emotional thing with the phone calls. This movie was unlike that, had a different focus. You did not feel like a voyeur, you felt like you were there.

To tell you the truth I had no idea who was who? I found out after the movie online. The actor that Played Tom Brunette I was expecting him to resemble Tom who was a dark haired Man, not a redhead? The only character I did know was Sandy and Cee Cee. But it did not bother me during the film for it was such a roll a coaster ride I had no time to figure out who was who......

The way some of the people on this board have misconstrued the film's message as a sermon of rationalization for their beliefs is really quite shocking.

I went to your forum page and read all your posts. Welcome to FR.

Thank you for your comments and insight into the making of the film. I happened to see some of the family members interviewed and they are all pleased with the film.

As for your shock regarding the manner in which some here have "misconstrued the film's message," I say, so what?" Films are art and to each his own interpretation. After all, "interpretation" is exactly what the film's maker has presented, from the facts available and the tapes.

United 93 isn't playing in my small town yet, but I intend to see it and I hope you're still here when I come back to this thread to tell you how I received it.

Again, thanks for your comments and welcome to FR.

At the crash site, did anyone catch the conversation between the firemen and FBI(?) men? Conspiracy tinted, maybe?

You mean the "where the hell is the plane" stuff? I thought it just highlight the catastrophic nature of the crash. The plane hit the ground at a tremendous speed. I think it almost nose dived in. Some was pulverized, and the debris was spread over a large area. I don't they recovered and large sized pieces.

I saw the film Saturday night here in Illinois. I thought it was very well done. I was relieved that there was not an attempt to add further drama, such as personal stories, etc. It captured the feeling -- as best a mere movie can -- of actually being on the plane.

Has anyone heard a review from a person who was actually involved in one of the key air traffic control centers? I'd be interested in their evaluation of the accuracy of the portrayal of events in the centers.

ScreenIt.com now has a parents' review up for United 93. Anyone thinking about taking their children should probably have a look.

As for the profanity issue I asked about earlier, here's the summary:

At least 7 "f" words, 8 "s" words, 4 hells, 1 crap, 8 uses of "Oh my God," 5 uses of "Jesus Christ," 3 each of "G-damn" and "Jesus," 2 of "Oh God" and 1 use each of "God" and "Oh Jesus."

It was a sheet of A-1 plywood, but with a "R" description.

On a series note, I'll be taking the two oldest grand kids, 14 and 12 to see it next weekend.
This event is not a rap video, but a reflection of a horrible event. These kids have a close relative who done a couple of tours in the sand box. Hopefully, it will give them a better appreciation of who-what-why.

I hope so also; however, I'm too pessimistic about Hollywood. I doubt they'd give any recognition to any film that (1) didn't change the Muslim terrorists to Nazi's, and (2) didn't have a "strong, committed loving and persecuted" gay male couple as the heroes.

AuteurEye replied:

You claim that the filmmakers would place a "strong gay couple" as the backbone of this film are insulting and you should be ashamed of yourself.

I don't believe that 3cats was talking about the filmmakers. I believe she was talking about Hollyweird. So don't be offended. I too believe that having a "strong gay couple" would have been very offensive. But I am thankful that the director was wise enough to leave Hollywood values out of the movie.

I agree with 3cats. We can only hope that the media and the movie industry would keep more of their offensive ideology out of the movies. I applaud your friend Mr. Paul Greengrass for his ability to accomplish this so well.

As for the deserved recognition for the movie 3cats mentioned -- the media has already started their attempt to call this movie a failure. Take a look a box office mojo and you can see for yourself. Brokeback Mountain gets numbers like this and its an over the top hit. A decent movie made on a small budget without the massive free advertising of Brokeback and after three days they are all ready to call it a flop.

Well, I think they are wrong, but I guess that is just the media doing what it loves to do.

Thank you for the wonderful information in your other posts and welcome to Free Republic.

From what I've heard, that is consistant with how Al Qaeda runs their cells in the US. The leader is someone who is functional in western culture, speaks at least some English, etc. Then they import henchmen who probably speak no English but rely on the leader to get around and maintain their cover.

Fish_Keeper, thanks!
