Congressmen back Scouts in ACLU suit
Worldnet Daily ^ | November 9, 2005 | Unknown

Ninety members of Congress filed a brief yesterday with a federal appeals court declaring support for the U.S. Defense Department in its sponsorship of the Boy Scouts of America's national jamboree.

The department's backing of the quadrennial event, attended this year by more than 40,000 Scouts, was opposed in a 1999 lawsuit brought by the American Civil Liberties Union.

The ACLU contends federal government sponsorship violates the First Amendment, because the Boy Scouts require members to swear an oath to "do my duty to God and my country."

The next jamboree is scheduled for 2010 to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America.

Represented by the American Center for Law and Justice, the lawmakers' friend-of-the-court brief to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit seeks a reversal of a lower court decision that declared the Defense Department's sponsorship unconstitutional.

The 1972 statute passed by Congress, the lower court declared, violates the so-called "separation of church and state."

Jay Sekulow, chief counsel of the ACLJ, says the lower court simply "got it wrong."

"The military provides the Boy Scouts with support and services that aid both the military and the Scouts without endorsing religion," he said.

Look for several Democrats to be among these "friends" of the Scouts. An attempted head fake to look reasonable. I know Bill Nelson of Florida, in an ATTEMPT to look "moderate" or "conservative" is pretending like he cares about the Boy Scouts.

Serious or not, it's about time Congress took
a stand on this ACLU outfit. We probably
wouldn't even HAVE a Democracy in this land
if the ACLU had been active during the time of
its founding; too many peoples' "rights" were
being trodden on.

ACLU was not entirely to blame. The liberal Courts sided with them. That is why we are trying to return the Courts to the Constitution. This will stop the ACLU in it's track.

We DON'T "have a democracy in this land".

America is a REPUBLIC...not a democracy--the Founding Fathers were strongly opposed to democracy, & therefore they established America as a REPUBLIC, & required that all states have a republican form of government as well.

Another option would be to LIMIT THE JURISDICTION OF THE FEDERAL COURTS, as well as ELIMINATE all federal courts except for the Supreme Court. The Constitution gives Congress the power to do this, & I think doing that would be an even better way to solve the problem.

"ACLU was not entirely to blame. The liberal Courts sided with them."

Many of the liberal Courts we have today, are the product of the ACLU.
They started out small and worked their way up to SCOTUS.
