Halted gun sales infuriate customers

BATON ROUGE, La. -- As fearful residents rush to stock up on guns, Wal-Mart, one of the region's biggest suppliers, abruptly stopped selling them at 40 stores scattered throughout the Gulf Coast.

-snip-

Wal-Mart's decision to stop gun sales also earned it praise from several customers, who said police would protect them from any trouble.

''Why can't we get along? This is a time of crisis," said Mike White of Kenner, La. He said people who need guns for legitimate reasons, such as hunting, would not be buying now.

From the article:

One mother came in to buy her first gun after she and her two children, ages 9 and 12, witnessed a slaying on the streets of New Orleans, said Scott Roe, Spillway's owner.

''Her comment was, 'I was a card-carrying, antigun liberal -- not anymore,' " Roe said. ''She said, 'I'm going back home, and I am not going back unarmed.' "

When I was in college I did a study on the average time it took the police to respond to a 911 emergency call. The average time was 19 minutes. A lot can happen to you in 19 minutes if you are not prepared. And, I would much rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6.

Smaller stores are eagerly filling the void. Spillway Sportsman, near Baton Rouge, sold 172 guns in one three-day period after the hurricane, when normally it might sell 15.

And some people are finally wising up.

Hypothetically...
When Marshal Law was declared, the military, both Federal and state troops, started confiscating weapons from the civilians (I heard no distinction between hand guns for self defense or long guns, or between neighbor hoods).
If one of the purposed of the second amendment is to provide a means of resistance to federal intervention, how are the people suppose to both protect themselves and operate offensively?

"...several customers, who said police would protect them from any trouble."

This is amazing. The mindset of sheeple even in the face of a cataclysmic breakdown in law and order is truly disturbing to people such as me. I can't fathom ever abdicating my responsibility to be my own first line of self defense and hand that over to "the authorities."

Those who rely on government in a crisis are at best going to be disappointed and at worst are going to be dead.

My reply was not over response time, it was over the ultimate response. The police used to show up and take a report. In N.O. they show up, kick in your door, disarm you, handcuff you and take you off to a 2.5x6 foot cot. There is no 2cnd, 4th, or 14th Amendment. All this talk of buying guns is moot when the freepers of all people don't realize what N.O. means.

What the hell does he know? I'm not a goose hunter but I do think we have an early goose season coming up real soon here in Michigan. I assume Louisiana is the same as Michigan in the fact that some critters are open season year round.

???? Who cares if you are duck hunting? That can wait. The most legitamate reason is self defense - from thugs and the government.

Self defense isn't a legitimate reason? Hell, I like hunting and all, but self defense is far more legitimate than hunting because you're defending your life versus bludgeoning animals.

Yes, and in fact, there is no Constitutional right to hunt, so how could the Second Amendment be in reference to hunting?

Have you called your congressman and senators over what is happening in N.O.? If not you are passively accepting the disarming of fellow Americans. Have you called the NRA-ILA? GOA? etc.

Anyone have a link to the Supreme Court decision which ruled that the police are not required to protect us.

Why, yes – if marking a tape outline of your body is “protecting”.

Several customers who don't realize that the population of Baton Rouge just doubled with residents from the most crime ridden city in the country. I'm boycotting Walmart over this. I'll buy my wares elsewhere. Screw em.
