Since the governors and mayors in the affected areas have not announced marshal law and curfews, do you think the President will?

the EPA said they have notified all 50 states that they are doing away with the emission controls at least until Sept 15.

Does this impact state air pollution controls? Calif. has more stringent requirements than EPA.

Please elaborate, if possible. I may not be sufficiently worried.

That the destruction is unprecedented. That the number of deaths is overwhelming. That the situation is dire. That we need assistance to prevent more deaths and suffering.

Unprecedented-check, overwhelming-check, dire-check, need assistance-check. OK, I was already sufficiently worried.

Advocating secure borders is a "cheap shot"?

No, grinding your axe in a thread that has nothing to do with borders is a "cheap shot." There are roughly a bazillion other threads on FR for you to discuss border security.

The policies that were supposed to hold the oil companies to account and made it possible for them to make those profits.

I am beyond ticked off at how the NO Mayor and the Gov. of Louisiana handled this all

Their handling of this is just appalling.

Many people are saying this.

It's the mayor & gov's responsibility to take command and act first & foremost.

Louisiana's offshore oil wells provide about 18 percent of our domestic production. If you lose that source, it is obvious that the entire country will feel the effect. Here is an interesting 2003 article, which is almost prescient in describing what the impact of another major hurricane, which cut off the southernmost stretch of Louisiana Highway 1,. Oil Artery Clog Could Impact U.S. It is a good read for anyone really interested in why the price of gasoline is going up--in a hurry.

An aerial view of New Orleans is seen from Air Force One, August 31, 2005. Air Force One made an unprecedented low-level flight over the destruction areas caused by hurricane Katrina so that President Bush could survey the damage.

The only relevance to NO is the number of hispanics in the city , which is relatively small. More to the point is the historic political corruption in the state, which goes back to Huey Long.

There is history. Last year they did evacuate the city and not much happened. If they ordered evacuation early this time a lot of residents were prepared to claim excessive crying of 'wolf'. Either way, the top officials take a hit.

It's the mayor & gov's responsibility to take command and act first & foremost

EXACTLY!!

Though the President can do many things to help those folks down there

It is the Local, City and State Officials that have to make those decisions first

They need to get their act together and fast!

"You border freaks just cannot and will not give it a rest."

Well sir, knowing what you mean by border freak, I am one. Anyone who reads my posts on illegal immigration threads knows this.

And I agree completely with you. This is not the time or place.

I agree with you. The president is a moral man and possesses all of qualities that compelled me to vote for him. The previous man was a charlatan and totally disgraced the office. I still disagree with some of our current president's logistics. If we had secured the borders of Iraq, the insurgents from Iran and Syria wouldn't have made it in to disrupt our honorable attempt to bring democracy to the Iraq. Likewise, if we knew who was entering the USA, we could possibly prohibit a Trojan Horse entry. Everybody gets so defensive.
