The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

Thanks for the info. That is reassuring. I've heard several of the rescuers and nonpartisan-type participants talk about how amazed they were by the scale of the cooperation involved, but little of that has been visible to the public, such as the bus evac in Kenner that started 3 hours ago, but as far as I can tell only rated a short mention on CNN. Might be a good idea for FEMA and the gov to give a news conference tomorrow with some specific answers that give the public more of an idea of what the plan is and some of how it is going to be implemented.

LOL. I guess not. Poor Shep. He is now! (Can you hear the sloshing when he tilts his head?)

It is seriously going from bad to worse there. Looting, riots, and now the apparent attack on a police station. What the hurricane didn't ruin, the residents seem hell-bent on ruining.

Are you listening to this fool Mayor from NO on CNN ??

He thinks it will be 4 weeks till they can start getting NO back to NO

He is a FOOL!

I heard it too. There's still places in Florida still devastated from last year's round of hurricanes. Many houses and buildings still have tarped roofs, and many residents still live in government housing.

That NO mayor sounds like a real jackass.

"The generators should have had a MONTHS' fuel?

Have you ever run a generator system? Keeping fuel fresh is an ongoing problem for little-used generator systems"

The WTC had such a generator - its tank caught on fire and burned down the building next door.

They have fuel stabilizers and nitro flushes - ps what about natural gas? LP?

Theres a million wasy for this not to work - the trick is to get the one or two ways it will work.

Reporters from the MSM should not be there IMHO. That would be scarey though.

Surely you jest. I don't think this woman is CAPABLE of giving a definitive order... (sorry, I don't mean to demean people from NO here)..

The Dome is waist deep in water now, and forecast to be twice that by morning.

Opportunities, perhaps critical windows, missed while they sat and fiddled in the leadership seats.

CNN just ran a "photo essay" of hurricane, using still photos rather than video. Interesting how much more graphic the still shots were (to my eye, anyway) than video.

One more day of this dithering and the President will have to step in and put someone in charge of the entire relief effort. I expect real martial law or some FEMA approximation by Thursday.

Why do I suspect dumping this on President Bush's shoulders is the plan?

Just mentioning potential infections. The guy mentioned how people with AIDS are more susceptible. I hadn't thought of AIDS in the equation.

Seeing as there are 250,000 small boats

This goes on much longer and I think you'll start to see people frustrated by the lack of urgency of the local officials start to use those boats to save people. Just to the southwest (on higher and drier land) there are many good Cajun people with boats who I cannot believe will stand by and do nothing while they watch the innaction on television.

If there are 60,000 people to evacuate and if 20,000 are men, 25,000 are women, and 15,000 are children, and if women and children must be evacuated first, and if each boat holds 12 people, and if one woman must accompany each child, and if 1 National Guardsman must accompany each boat and if a boat travels at a maximum speed of 2 miles per hour and if the nearest high ground is 5 miles away and if there are 50 boats and 40 available Guardsmen, then how long will it for everyone to reach safety?

I am with you on more refineries and cut out the blend. That is ridiculous to have refineries have to switch over. Fortunately, OK does not have the blend because our two Senators took the EPA to court and won.

30,000+ trapped in the Superdome..........

Unreal. They're going to have to think and move fast down there. When they did get the breach fixed, there was already 2 feet of water around the SD.
