The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

They need to be rolling in trucks and busses to get the SuperDome folks out.

Set up tent cities in Memphis, Houston, Little Rock, etc and start bussing them out. They don't have homes to go back to, the city can't feed or clothe them. Once the evacuees are in an undamaged area, they
can get aid and hopefully contact friends or relatives for longer term shelter.

One more day of this dithering and the President will have to step in and put someone in charge of the entire relief effort. I expect real martial law or some FEMA approximation by Thursday."

The Dome is waist deep in water now, and forecast to be twice that by morning.

Helos and boats. If you have another idea post it, because the capacity is not there, not with everything else that's going on.

The generators should have had a MONTHS' fuel?

Have you ever run a generator system? Keeping fuel fresh is an ongoing problem for little-used generator systems. Merely a few days' worth of tanks is hard enough to keep fresh for an ongoing basis. A months' worth? You mean they have to have a 30,000 gallon tank, none of which can be more than a few months old?

Yes... I can see it now...

If this has been a fun thread for you, you have something wrong.

I suspect you are an employee of the governor. You have not read a thing here if you think what you posted.

Go have your beer with the refuges,,,liar.

They got evicted out of the hotel this morning due to the imminent flooding.... said they used candles, etc... to feed everyone and the piano player was playing stormy weather as they were leaving... they reported from atop a bridge somewhere today. When Rick Leventhal started describing all the damage in his native Mississippi Shep was moved to tears.

Historically barges loaded with rock and sunk have had some success in reducing flows.

"How long do you think it would take to move 60,000 people by small boats and helicopters?

Seeing as there are 250,000 small boats within 4 hours of New Orleans (to say nothing of 5,000 school busses) , not very long.

There was an earlier report that 3 were rescued from there. Unless they were plucked out of the Gulf, there is still at least something there. But I'm guessing that it is much changed.

I agree .. but I highly doubt the state officials there would let that happen

I share your doubt.

However, given that state-level authorities are blowing this on multiple fronts, the choice may well need taken from them.

Not much sense in moving people until they have a place to move them. I would imagine they will begin moving them tomorrow.

How do you get them out?

The water is still rising, and the thousands of souls in the Superdome are still swelling.

gosh.. perhaps not a bad thought.. but I am really sort of down on those folks given the Aruba mess.. but they may have the technical capacity... I am just for what works for the people..

Your thought about the Netherlands capacity is exactly what I call our American Initiative.. we reach out to find the best.. then improve and implement...

Thanks...

"Power has got to be the problem." Well, sorta. My understanding is that the emergency generators for the pumps are in sheds that were destroyed. Getting to them, getting them up & running should not be a long-term project, just a repair job.
