That would be the fabric roof/sealer that got ripped off. The steel roof is still just fine except for a few missing panels and inspection ports.

From what I've read, none of this was unexpected. The engineers on scene aren't worried about it.

Good news!

Dang...I mean, Panama City's not perfect, but at least before every storm the local TV and radio stations broadcast repeatedly where the regular and special needs shelters are, and the county (working with the Red Cross) makes sure that there are enough shelters to accommodate those who need them.

I doubt Panama City houses 20,000 in shelters. There was footage of the buses used to bring people to the Superdome. Looks like there was a plan of sorts.

Uh, that was my point. I noted out that the lithospheric bending was from the sediment column, not the local effects of building weight or groundwater pumping (which is a greater effect in clays than silts, anyway, and especially insidious with hysteresis).

Perhaps I wasn't clear enough in my post. Thank you for clarifying.

Yeah, this thread has been nearly worthless and a waste of time to scroll through.

Well, I see you've done you share to make it that way.

This is the way live threads are, period. Quite being such a PITA.

That's a classic, but terrifying description of inland storm surge.

I hope they are all right!

From the WWL-TV Website noon posting...

Homeland Security Chief Terry Ebbert estimates it may take a month to get power back to everyone in New Orleans.

Councilman Oliver Thomas said he had received 120 distress calls from people in the Ninth Ward trapped by the storm. He said crews can not get to these people until hurricane force winds cease, the guess for that time frame is about 2 p.m.

Karen Swensen reports that Charity Hospital lost its windows on the 4th floor and that patients are being huddled in the hallways.

Senator Walter Boasso of St. Bernard Parish says there is 12 feet of water in most of the parish, up to the second floor in many homes.

Reports of 3-4 feet of water in Lakeview.

Apartment building on Wright Avenue in Terrytown has collapsed with people inside, according to Jefferson Parish Sheriff Harry Lee. Rescue crews have not been able to get to the scene as of 9:30 a.m.

Karen Swensen says there is 3 feet of water downtown near the Hyatt. She reports several office windows coming out whole from buildings.

Two holes ripped in Superdome roof, visible from facility floor, according to Associated Press reports.

.. A LEVEE BREACH OCCURRED ALONG THE INDUSTRIAL CANAL AT TENNESSE STREET. 3 TO 8 FEET OF WATER IS EXPECTED DUE TO THE BREACH...LOCATIONS IN THE WARNING INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO ARABI AND 9TH WARD OF NEW ORLEANS.

St. Bernard Parish spokesman Larry Ingargiola says the parish's two shelters at Chalmette High and St. Bernard High are suffering major damage. He said Chalmette High shelter is losing its roof, and St. Bernard High has plenty of broken windows and glass. He estimates 300-plus refugees at the two sites.

Entergy says 317,000 customers were without power as of 6 a.m. Cleco reported 40,000 without power in St. Tammany Parish.

St. Bernard Parish officials say most of the parish has no power.

Can't stand a bit of chit chat and good humor? Try a different forum!

There is more chit chat than news on this thread. Please take the chat elsewhere, this is a major breaking news event and we need to keep the signal-to-noise ratio strong.

Looks like a feeder band is starting to move into NO from the south, with westerly winds. Probably "only" Cat 1 strength. Cat 1 killed 9 people in Florida who didn't take Cat 1 winds seriously. And this feeder band has a lot of debris to work with - and will be hitting it at 90 degrees from the last major winds - so debris piled in the lee of the last strong winds will now be exposed.

Last report from Mobile I saw stated that there was 3 feet of water downtown.

CNN: Reporter from Gulfport says lots of damage, many roofs are gone.
