"Congressman Reconquista": Immigration Reformers Not Welcome In GOP
by William Norman Grigg
May 7, 2005
According to Utah Congressman Chris Cannon, a shameless flack for the illegal immigrant lobby, those committed to protecting our borders cannot be true Republicans.
During a May 4 Washington, D.C. forum sponsored by the Latino Coalition, Representative Chris Cannon (R-Utah), a congressional point man for the Bush administrations illegal immigrant amnesty proposal, suggested that fellow Republican congressman Tom Tancredo of Colorado "ought to reconsider his membership in the Republican Party," reported the Rocky Mountain News.
While Rep. Tancredo, like most politicians, has a lot to answer for such as his support for the Iranian Mujahiddin al-Kalq, a Marxist terrorist group his stance on immigration reform and border control has been sound and commendable. He has clashed repeatedly with the Bush administration over its proposed amnesty for illegal immigrants, and been pointedly rebuked by the White House on more than a few occasions.
By way of contrast, Rep. Cannons attitude toward the Bush administration is one of utter servility. His relationship with the "Reconquista Lobby" foundation-funded open borders groups like the Mexican-American Legal Defense and Education Fund (MALDEF) and La Raza is close kindred to treason.
In March 2003, Cannon helped create the U.S.-Mexico Political Caucus. In a June 6, 2002 speech to a gathering of MALDEF, where he was presented with the groups "Excellence in Leadership Award," Cannon declared: "We love immigrants in Utah And we dont oftentimes make the distinction between legal and illegal. In fact I think Utah was the first state in the country to legislate the ability to get a drivers license based on the matricula consular [card] and of that I am proud." The "matricula" card referred to by Cannon is an insecure ID card issued by Mexican consulate to Mexican nationals in this country, whether here legally or illegally.
During the 2004 campaign, Cannon faced an unexpected primary challenge by immigration reform candidate Matt Throckmorton, who offered a strong showing despite being outspent by several orders of magnitude. On several occasions Cannon accused his immigration-reform critics of being in league with eugenicists, neo-Nazis, and other despicable folks. Cannon plumbed similar depths of dishonesty during the May 4 discussion.
"I dont think theres a place in the Republican Party for racism, for xenophobia, for ideas that are fundamentally un-American," groused the Reconquista Lobbys favorite Republican congressman. Referring to Rep. Tancredo, Cannon declared: "I think he ought to consider his views and decide whether theyre consistent with the Republican Party."
It apparently hasnt occurred to Cannon that all congressmen (himself included) swore an oath to uphold the U.S. Constitution, not the platform of the GOP, the policies of the president, or the whims of foreign lobbies like MALDEF. Agitating on behalf of the abolition of our national borders may be "consistent with the Republican Party" as led by George W. Bush, but its hardly consistent with that solemn oath of office and fellow traveler with the likes of MALDEF are in no position to cast aspersions on the patriotic standing of those who believe in enforcing our immigration laws.
I think populationist propaganda had less to do with it than hard economic realities. I strongly advocate returning per-child deductions to the real (inflation-adjusted) value they had when the income tax was introduced, instead of treating the decision to have children as essentially equal to the decision to have tropical fish.
Retirees can't be supported on the tax payments of lawn-mowers and toilet-scrubbers; no help there.
We also need to seriously and consistently punish employers who violate laws against hiring illegals. Too many pols of both parties go to bat for the lawbreaking (and campaign-contributing) employer against law enforcement.
Wow. This sounds like terrorism.. Latin Al-Queda setting up 'cells' to murder Americans. Sheese, what are we worrying about security for?? I know I know, Kennedy and McCain are going to fix this. Uh-Huh... back to sleep now America... alllllll is fine.
"Which punk ...?"
Congressman Cannon.
He's an opportunists in my book.
How about returning the income tax to the net-net basis on which it was imposed 50 years ago?
I still have my parent's returns for the early 1950's in which they deducted numbers of items that are no longer deductible. The income tax was basically imposed on income over and above the cost of living.
The dramatic expansion of the income tax has been the reduction of deductions, after the steep progressivity was introduced, which originally was justified under the rubric that, well, nobody really needs all that income to live.
Once the high marginal rates were in effect, the Congress went back and reduced deductions, just like they did in 1986 and as they are doing now, effectively, with the Alternative Minimum Tax.
Concurring needs-to-be-emphasized bump.
From his web site. My first litmus test of every male Republican. When did they turn 18 and which branch of the military did they serve in. Chris, a Vietnam age young man, failed the test.
In the future, it will be interesting to see how many of his eight children--particularly his sons, follow in their father's footsteps as opposed to doing the right thing.
Look into Geneva Steel. I don't know. I do know Nucor does quite well without a hint of hiring illegals. His touchiness may have more to do with the "mission work" he was doing while other men his age were sacrificing performing military missions for their country. Apparently he wandered around spanish speaking areas for a couple years in lieu of going to Fort Benning.
I did a quick Babelfish translation since my Spanish is so rusty (haven't had it since college). Nothing new in there...NK is accusing us of forming a dastardly "Plan 5029" with SK whereby we would attack NK. They are screaming that we're getting ready to attack them and are urging all Koreans (northern and southern) to oppose the Imperialist Monster. It's just the usual Marxist hogwash. My question is if these Aztlan pukes are cozying up to the Marxists of the world and, if so, how close that relationship is.
There are plenty of miscreants in the world -- Marxists, Islamofascists, and others, with the same goal: the destruction of the United States. I have no problem imagining them teaming up in pursuit of it.
BTTT
But what is "Plan 5029"?
