I have been directed to read Hal Lindsey about the choice of Cardinal Ratzinger and future prophecy.
He appears to be a commentator, but I am getting a funky vibe.
Does anyone know anything about this guy and his prophecies?

That's true ... good observation.
God is looking for people who want to get down to His business and be servants to a world that needs to see the love of God. That's what we have been "Left Behind" to do. There are a lot who want to go live on a mountain top and get 'taken away.' The church is not put here to survive and wait for escape, but to conquer, with the love of Christ. Did he change the mission sometime after the first century. This dispensationalism that follow (pre-trib rapture, 2 covenants) was not even a theological idea until about 1850. A member of a sect called the Bretheren in England had a vision where he saw the church taken out. There are a lot of scritural problems I have with that. But back to the subject at hand, Hal Lindsey, to me, preaches that the Blessed Hope of the Church is escaping, when the Blessed Hope of the Church is Jesus, crucified and Risen. If there is a pre-trib Rapture, then great, all those who trust Jesus will be in it.
Hal Lindesy and all the other angry prophets want to call down fire from heaven on all the evil going on the world. That's what it deserves, but that's what I deserved before I accepted His offer of Life.
As far as those 'left behind,' I think Hal Lindsey says that the Holy Spirit will be taken out of the world during the great tribulation, and that the only way to be saved will be to die. So is God going to do a new way of salvation during those years. The only way that I know of to be saved is to respond to the conviction of the Holy Spirit and accept God's way, Jesus. Now if someone is preaching that there will be a new way, then let him, as the apostle Paul said, be accursed, for there is only one Gospel.

But he did not forsee hte fall of soviet communism. In the aftermath of that boogyman's evaporation, he immediately started looking for other scarecrows to cower before.
Paul makes clear in Gal 6:16 that the fulfillment of Israel is the church. So Jeremiah's prophecies here are fulfilled in the church, not the geographical country. The geographical country will not last forever; the church will.

That verse has nothing to do with Israel supplanting the Church.

Let's just say he has quite an imagination. The only reason to read any of his books is so you can understand what others are saying. After reading his first two, I'd say he isn't worth the effort. Same reason I have not read "The Divinci Code".
Well .. you better read Ezekiel 38-39 - because that is all about Israel's war with China and Russia - and many nations from the north. They will meet with Israel in the Valley of Miggido where GOD will show up and defeat all of Israel's enemies. This war will be on TV - filmed from a TV station on top of Mt. Carmel - which just happens to be in the Valley of Miggido.
When the world gets to view GOD destroying Israel's enemies - it will be time for the church to gather the final harvest.
What will bring on this war you ask ?? Check out Isaiah 17:1 - The burden of Damascus. Behold, Damascus is taken away from being a city, and it shall be a ruinous heap. Damacus is still standing - so that scripture has yet to be fulfilled.
I would surmise that if Israel happened to drop a nuke on Damascus it might rile up Russia and China and quite a few others who would see it as an opportunity to get rid of Israel once and for all.
That's what I thought too!! (Barney Miller - one of the funniest shows ever and probably would not get made on a network today).

You must take into account who Paul is talking to. Believers in Christ.

I, frankly, do not buy into his world view and do not believe he knows what he is talking about.
