Since I retired several months ago, I've had plenty of time to listen to talk radio and I've been able to come up with my own factors for rating some of the hosts.
It is this: Who provides depth and insight and who doesn't?
To me, those who provide depth and insight include: Rush Limbaugh Dennis Prager Michael Medved Larry Elder
Those who fall into the "No **** Sherlock / Captain Obvious to the Rescue" category include: Laura Ingraham Sean Hannity
That's my opinion. What's yours?
I don't know. The reason I think they may be plants is that sometimes the topics aren't top of mind topics of the day that people would be calling in to discuss. People aren't waiting in cue to discuss something that simply is the luck of some wayward riff that Rush starts.
I really like Hugh. He does stream on the Internet from 4-7 pm Mountain time.
Or need to start building their personal library. You know he's got a book out, don't you?
Had to do that :)
I don't begrudge Laura her baby talk, I just don't care to hear it. Now don't I sound like a cranky ole lady!

In re Art Bell: See my #151 comment...
I don't get to listen enough to determine if it the same voices, but again, these rants are too far off the beaten path for someone to already be on hold and it's too difficult to get through to find that one caller ready to go on an obscure topic.
Welcome to FR. Mrs. DFU is a quilting phenom.
All except Rush. I got through to him once but Medved was the host that day years ago. I've probably only made about 2,000 calls to talk shows. :)
Rush, Laura, Medved, and a Dallas guy named Greg Knapp. He's destined for syndication.
I disagree about Laura. Even my favorite Senator (Jon Kyl) thinks she is great.
Although she and her boys can get a bit juvenile at times.
I think Bill Bennett is also very insightful, but his voice puts me to sleep when I'm trying to wake up.
I agree but Hugh Hewitt should be next to Rush.
Hmmm, I scanned a few dozen posts and didn't see one comment about Mike Gallagher. Wonder why?
And let me add Tammy Bruce, on KNEW 4-7 pm Saturday evenings. She's sharp.
Speaking of Hugh, he has a really good show going on RIGHT NOW.
Bump for later.
1 = Rush
2 = Sean
3 = Hugh Hewitt
4 = Michael Medved
Rush # 1, But I love Laura, agree sometimes about the juvenile behavior but she is very funny and her sidekicks are funny too. Howie Carr is the best I have heard Barr none! Too bad he is not coast to coast. Sean is good but is too nice. Best of all the rest is Marc Levine in New York I could listen to him all day! He is funny, insightful, smart, acerbic, and can reduce the best the liberals have to weeping little girlie men faster than anyone else on radio!
There's a reason he couldn't make it in New York.
And BTW, to all you guys who think Rush invented talk radio (and I like Rush), he didn't. He was the first to do a political show in national syndication. Bob Grant started doing a talk show about national political issues in 1962 in California. He moved to NYC in 1970 and is still on here two hours a day. Rush has credited him in the past, but not recently. Rush was particularly gracious in his comments about Grant when Grant was fired from WABC in the wake of his comments after the plane crash that killed Ron Brown.
Grant may be abrasive at times, but there is no one on the radio who is as well read and knowledgeable as he.

Kevin McCullough 2-4
Sean Hannity 4-6
Mark Levin 6-8**** must listen!
Laura Ingraham 8-10
