Rating the radio talk show hosts
Posted on 03/03/2005 1:31:07 PM PST by EveningStar
Since I retired several months ago, I've had plenty of time to listen to talk radio and I've been able to come up with my own factors for rating some of the hosts.
It is this: Who provides depth and insight and who doesn't?
To me, those who provide depth and insight include: Rush Limbaugh Dennis Prager Michael Medved Larry Elder
Those who fall into the "No **** Sherlock / Captain Obvious to the Rescue" category include: Laura Ingraham Sean Hannity
That's my opinion. What's yours?
TOPICS: Constitution/Conservatism; Culture/Society; Philosophy; Your Opinion/Questions
KEYWORDS: besttalkshowhost; gr8american; hewittnumberone; inmybook; savage; talkradio; talkshowhosts

Yes, Rush is the Man! I can't think of another person that I could listen to for 3 hours and not get bored.
Laura Ingraham is good, but I'm getting tired of her sidekicks in the studio and the sound effects.

Michael Medved is the best, by far.
Meanwhile, on the Hannity show, I tried to listen because Ari Fleischer was on, but Sean kept mispronouncing Ari's three letter name to his face and then referred to a relative of "Medgar EVANS" instead of Medgar Evers. Stuff like that shows he's not well read.

Someone whose views I like but whose show I can't really abide is Dr. Laura, she's too preachy sometimes, and her guests seem to be sooooo dumb sometimes, too.I won't argue with that! Frankly I'd go berserk having to deal with mental midgets 5 days a week. Guess that's why she's a doctor and I am not.

I can't tolerate too much of Laura. Between her voice, topics, and sound effects, it sounds amateurish.

Both excellent points. I've e-mailed her about how annoying her sidekicks can be but She won't respond. Also I get tired of all the baby and dog talk.

It's too hard to get through to find someone after a short riff on a topic that 's ready to go. Try it sometimes. These have to be staged calls.
Let's see. Rush knows he wants to talk about Issues "A", "B", and "C". He tells his screeners. Thousands of calls come in. The screeners pick several callers to put on hold for each issue, perhaps with a specific perspective that Rush told them he wanted to get out (i.e. "give me a teacher who can tell me that her administrators told her to teach about condoms").
Then, as the show proceeds, Rush scans the on-hold list, and brings the right callers on just as he wants to cover that aspect of the topic. I think that is how the format is designed. It would be harder to do it the "staged" way that to do it this way.

Don't dare leave out Neal Boortz. Anybody who has never listened to Neal is missing out. Neal is the man!

I would defend Hannity on this basis -
1) He appeals to young people and women.
2) By doing so he brings this demographic into the conservative fold.
I have no problem with that.
Me neither. Hannity is the kindergarten teacher of talk-show-hosts.

Thanks for the ping.
RE: Walter Williams...
I can't agree more. I like him too. ...He comes across as a little more 'sane' than some of the others mentioned. (...sadly)

Lee Rodgers on the KSFO morning show is, without doubt, the best, without a single peer.

Also I get tired of all the baby and dog talk. I like the dog talk (I wonder if Laura ever found a way to get the dog poop out of her new straw rug?), but the baby talk had me turning the dial to a local talk guy.

Baby talk - Laura is a Woman at the point where time grows short. Give her some space on that. I became a dad 1st time at 47 (Wife 34). Women normally can't wait as long as I did...
Dog Talk. OK by me - I have 2 now, have had as many as 4 at once...if you don't have a dog, you don't probably relate to it. {ARF!}
