I am surprised Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson didnt refer to the smokers as swine in a pig sty. Isnt that, after all one of the one of the first images that comes to mind when think of a pen? Before I am offended by da mayor I would have to be offended by the reference to the term smoking pens. In a city and state that was founded by a group of people so seriously reviled for their own beliefs in years past, you would think they would be among the first to take a live and let live attitude about the behavior and choices of others. Clearly the past lessons learned about intolerance by the Mormons must now have been forgotten.
Only 88 airports nationwide is hardly a mandate to make ones own airport smoke free. Furthermore if these smoking kiosks are eliminated it will only cause people to find other places to smoke. Delta Airlines is correct in standing behind the rights of the smokers. Perhaps they have taken note that incidence of air rage only became prevalent AFTER smoking was banned on aircraft. It should also be noted that since the ban, they no longer use fresh air to ventilate the planes; instead, they just run the air through a filtrations system which in an enclosed environment further exacerbates the problem.
Mayor Andersons pompous arrogance in stating that the ban will help smokers to break the habit is outrageous. It is not his job to be neither a social engineer nor the arbiter of personal choices. I do know however, that as long as Salt Lake City and Utah continue down this Draconian path of heavy handed intolerance, I will avoid their state in very way possible. I will not travel to it, I will not travel thru it, and I will not support my company scheduling a convention there.
BANS ARE BAD! Read it again, BANS ARE BAD! Banning blacks from white facilities---BAD! Banning books---BAD! Banning Beer---Bad! If the people of Utah agree that these bans are bad, then they must also agree that banning smoking is also BAD! I would certainly hope at this juncture they are starting to realize that any action, that would favor a smoking ban of any type, will only create far more harm than good. IN all fairness I should note their may be one kind of good ban. That of course would be banning Mayor Anderson from further political office at the next election.
"Perhaps they have taken note that incidence of air rage only became prevalent AFTER smoking was banned on aircraft."
Interesting. Why are smokers more violent than non-smokers?
I've already broken the habit of flying so I don't need airports, now if I could just break the habit of reading I wouldn't need to smoke.
Richard Reed wasn't a smoker. Yet he wanted to take down the whole airline. Now that's what I call violent!
Quiet, but violent. We never know what lurks beneath someone's collar.
If you remember from yesterday's thread, and all the people that were killed or maimed, just because they smoke, were not violent. It was the anti-smokers that hurt and killed them. So, no. Violence is found in the heart's of people. And not all of them are smoker's.
This behavior is not restricted solely to tobacco smokers.
All addicts experience anxiety when they're unable to "fix".
Me, too. If I can't drive, I don't go.
It's not just the fact that a smoker can't smoke while flying. But the long lines getting through security. Being locked up once you are checked in.
Also, sitting on the tarmac for a few hours in that tube before taking off doesn't help a person's disposition either.
That kind of travel isn't for me. When I travel, it's for vacation purposes. That to me, is not a vacation.
Oh sure. I'm an addict now. Maybe I should take up coke. People can take their little vials into the bathroom and snort up. Can't see it. Can't smell it.
Gosh, I'd just love to sit next to a coke head on a long flight. Yep. Sounds fun to ME! heh!
If smoking makes some people "animals in a zoo", what does that make a 5c politician out of his depth?
That was a trick question.
When a politician resorts to labelling whole groups and name calling, he must be unaware that he is labelling himself the south end of a horse...
This will be amusing to FDR, Humphrey Bogart, Richard Feynman, Albert Einstein...
And the entire crew of Mission Control during the heyday of the U.S. space program.
Council Member,
The anti smoking hysteria sweeping Minnesota continues to amaze me. Never before have I seen so many people willing to believe the exaggerated claims, biased and false studies and hype spouted by the smoke-hater crowd. Common sense and a little research should have been enough to put an end to this fiasco.
I have owned my bar and restaurant for 25 years. I have paid over a million dollars in assorted taxes, hired hundreds of employees and adapted to every change in law, city policy and social trend during that time. I love this business, my staff and yes, most of my customers. I work very hard. The idea of restricting a legal product on private property might be the final straw for me to continue to want to do business here. The fact remains the death count from second hand smoke is still zero and a nonsmoker must go out of their way to be offended by smoke. The fear business owners have for their livelihood is justified.
The market place drives the issue and bar owners, by self-imposed partial bans or technology, have met that need for our customers. Telling a smoker he or she is welcome in the bar but can't smoke is like telling a vegetarian his favorite restaurant is now a steak house but he is still welcome to come in. A bar is exactly where you SHOULD be allowed to smoke.
Thankfully Mayor Kelly vetoed your smoking ban, it's nice to see some common sense over there. Small businesses everywhere are thanking Mayor Kelly today and wondering when your term expires.

And it does wonders for helping to spread germs and air borne diseases.
Oh yes. I forgot about that one.
Trading visible tobacco smoke for invisible diseases of all kinds.
Brilliant!
This sets up the perfect conditions for environmental aircraft conditions terrorism. Create a closed system. As I said: brilliant!
Been using tobacco since 1983.... don't plan on stopping.
ROTFLMAO!!!!!!!
Here is a solution:
They're not.
By far the greatest incidence of "air rage" is over alcohol...
OMG what a jerk!
But not atypical, huh?
Tobacco users are in the big leagues now.
They've got twelve step programs for y'all and everything.
: )
I have been following the smoking bans by the City Councils around Minnesota for several years. Maine Health Coalition seems to be cut from the same cloth that Minnesota uses.
They have MPPAT and Maine has PTFM. (Partnership for a Tobacco Free Maine).
Even though I would really miss smoking, I wish for one week, that all the states would pull tobacco off of the shelves for just ONE week. It would be fun just to stand on the outside and watch the civil war. Can you imagine??? Think about it!
