Another little John Kerry Vietnam story. See if you can detect why it's another Kerry lie.

Do you have any pets that have made an impact on you personally? Kerry: I have always had pets in my life and there are a few that I remember very fondly. When I was serving on a swiftboat in Vietnam, my crewmates and I had a dog we called VC. We all took care of him, and he stayed with us and loved riding on the swiftboat deck. I think he provided all of us with a link to home and a few moments of peace and tranquility during a dangerous time. One day as our swiftboat was heading up a river, a mine exploded hard under our boat. After picking ourselves up, we discovered VC was MIA. Several minutes of frantic search followed after which we thought we'd lost him. We were relieved when another boat called asking if we were missing a dog. It turns out VC was catapulted from the deck of our boat and landed confused, but unhurt, on the deck of another boat in our patrol.

I hope you're right but I would feel a lot better if I could read the citation for Thurlow.

Im sure IF Thurlow IN FACT got a bronze star that day, that O'Neill has read the citation.

Thurlow did in fact get a Bronze Star for his actions that day (March 13, 1969). And I agree, O'Neill has read it. I see no trap on this point (Thurlow's citation saying something about enemy fire, other than the mine).

I've been reading some blogs and liberal sites -- nobody has a good argument against the Swiftees. Nobdy! It's all smoke and mirrors, but some of the smoke and mirrors will trip a gullible public (e.g., Bill O'Reilly).

VC SUPPORT KERRY FOR PRESIDENT

(Gotta love that subliminal, vast right-wing conspiracy, mind control stuff)

Oh come on! Even his discussions about pets turn into tales of Viet Nam?!

What's next? Discussions on taxes? (Kerry to reporter) "Well, since you ask about taxes, I was riding in a swiftboat one day in Viet Nam, thinking about taxes....."

This guy is whacko!

Guys!!! You're sounding like a bunch of liberals here.

What I'm talking about is a big deal. If Thurlow is lying either then or now this whole thing is going to blow-up in our faces.

The Swifties have to be purer that Ceaser's wife. If Thurlow lied to obtain his Bronze or if he's lying now to discredit Kerry then this is going to end very ugly.

There are two reasons why this story doesn't add up.

1. As already mentioned, if the dog was thrown for the boat onto another, the boats would have to have been very close, thus no need to do an extensive search.

2. If the crew on the other boat we so close that the dog could blown onto it, then the crew would almost certainly have already known the dog and to whom it belonged. These crews lived together, not just conduct missions together.

The Magazine Masturbation International interviewed Kerry and asked him his thoughts on masturbation and his answer was amazing!

"one night on the Mekong river it was a slow night so i told all the men to go to sleep cause I was feelin' a little bit horny... back then we had this little dog named VC and he was a cute little guy that liked to cuddle with me... reminded me of my days back in college with the ladies... the moonlight was glistening off the Mekong that night I can remember like it was yesterday its seared - seared in my memory. I slowly unzipped my skivvies and started pumpin' the porpoise, I felt like a little kid on Christmas! then afterward I looked at the watch and noticed alot of time went by and the boat was moving downstream the whole time, WHOA! I thought I couldn't think a little bit... maybe 27 minutes or so... by the time i figured out where we were , we sure as hell were in Cambodia! Wholly crap I thought what would Nixon think if he wins the election? better not start an International incident, so I set the motor to troll, and we came back
the good thing of it is none of my men even knew we were ever in Cambodia on my secret masturbation mission."

No, I've not read the report. Thus the genesis of my initial question.

I'm looking for a source to Thurlow's Bronze Medal citation.

I want to read it and see for myself.

I thought PBR's were plastic, if that is so then a mine exploding under it should have created a rather large hole in the bottom. Also if the explosion was under the boat, then it was under water also so by physics, the water should have asborbed most of the shock waves and not been catapaulting anything anywhere, except the boat which should have went up or to the side depending on where exactly the mine was.

IMHO.

Excellent scepticism.

The truth seeker seeks to make a stronger case for his opponent than his opponent does.

Thus does FR distinguish itself from some other sites.

My guess is that there was simply some storytelling embellishment going on here (which of course Kerry is a pro at). The real story was probably that the dog had been knocked off the boat and then later picked up by another boat. Catapult would then get thrown in to make for a more interesting story while at the same time providing the funny visual of a dog getting blown from one boat to another. Otherwise the story would have sounded something like this: "there was a blast, VC tumbled off our boat, swam around for a while, then was picked up by another boat - during which time we had been searching around frantically until finally the other boat called and told us they had VC and that he was okay". Pretty dull stuff. Hence catapulted onto another boat to liven things up a bit. In fact, maybe the exploding mine was tossed into the story as well and the dog had simply jumped off while, say, trying to retrieve a certain chocolate chip cookie that had fallen overboard or some such thing.

"a mine exploding "hard under" a swiftboat in a shallow river would have turned said swiftboat into matchsticks and metal bits and pieces"

Agreed; I don't know much about VC "jungle-made" river-mines, but one would expect any mine going off "under a swiftboat" to turn kerry into little tiny purple hearts.
