'Armageddon' Plan Was Put Into Action on Sept. 11, 2001 (ABC Nightline Tonight)

An 'Armageddon' program designed to ensure that the federal government would continue to function in the aftermath of a nuclear war was put into place during the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
According to ABC's Nightline, which plans to report its findings tonight, every federal agency shifted its control to an alternate quarters outside Washington.
President Bush's decision to fly to Nebraska that day instead of returning to the White House, which drew some criticism at the time, was part of that plan.
Nightline expands on a book by James Mann that detailed the birth of the program, named 'Continuity of Government,' during the Reagan Administration.
Under the plan, if the United States were facing a nuclear attack, three teams of 50 federal officials would be sent from Washington to locations across the country-each with a Cabinet member who was prepared to become president.
This is what happened on September 11. 'Questions were raised by the talking heads about the President's courage or lack of it because he didn't return to Washington,' Nightline anchor Ted Kopppel said yesterday.
'This was absolutely the Armageddon plan put into effect.'

So there never really was a debate on if returning to Washington was an option during the afternoon.

A few months afterward, remember, Daschle was on TV complaining and whining about the 'shadow government'? He was saying he didn't know anything about it and Cheney was running a secret government, yada, yada, yada.
Daschle's complaint and whining got a week of liberal press.
Then Dsachle's complaints were later disproved because he, too, had been whisked away and was actually IN the 'shadow government' because he was Majority Leader of the Senate.
Is Nightline offering any real news or are they trying to incide Daschle's earlier complaint again?

Daschle is sickening. It's stuff like that which makes me wish President Bush would go on TV regularly with a Ross Perot-like spot. He could show a clip of Daschle proclaiming his horror at this mysterious shadow government, and then:
"See that? That's rich, that is. See, he says he doesn't know about this plan. And that's funny. It really is. I'll tell you why. It's funny, because he's in on it. We moved Tom to a safe location, for his own protection. Yes we did. He knew all about it. And this is the thanks we get from Senator Daschle. Boy, that's something, that is. Back home, we'd say he's lying like a rug, but I guess in Washington Ah'm not supposed to say stuff like that."

Daschle: There's No 'Shadow Government'

For once the White House called Senate plurality leader Tom Daschle on one of his lies, and he admitted today there was no "shadow government."
"Senator Daschle was here at the White House earlier today, where White House aides and others reiterated to the senator information that had previously been provided to people who work for him," White House spokesman Ari Fleischer said.
Daschle had groused Sunday that he and other congressional leaders had not been consulted on the Bush administration's activation of the program. But then the truth got out, and the South Dakota Democrat had to reveal he wasn't quite as ignorant as he pretended.
Of course, the wee prince of partisan obstructionism didn't exactly make a graceful apology.
"I think there ought to be a cease-fire on who knew what," a red-faced Daschle stammered. "I'm satisfied a contingency plan is in place that takes into account a pretty dramatic need for succession."
"He's backpedaling because it's demonstrably untrue what he said," Washington Times star reporter Bill Sammon said this evening on Fox News Channel. With Americans growing sick of Daschle's carping during wartime about the U.S. campaign against terrorism, it's "a good time to kind of cut his losses."
As the Weekly Standard's Fred Barnes noted on Fox News, the only reason this story got so much play was because the Washington press corps was hoping the White House screwed up. Now that it's clear Daschle and his fellow Dems were in the wrong, you won't see headlines saying "Daschle Wrong, White House Right," Barnes observed.

We're at war. The enemy has struck in Washington, DC. They may strike again. It would be idiotic to go back to condition white and act like they won't try again.
How long was it before Cheney and Bush were seen together? Most of the Cheney health rumors stemmed from his being kept separate from President Bush.
To: MediaMole
Why would anyone think it would be imperative for the POTUS to fly back into potential danger and harm?
It is his responsibility to lead this great nation, not be some sacrosanct martyr for democracy. And besides, he was following the directives established prior to his presidency. Someone needs to put a b**tplug in Daschels face. The BS that comes out of it needs to stop and I hope one day he chokes on it!
Idiot!

I like the way you put your plan into action. Actually I did the same thing, went to my neighborhood Ace Hardware store though for the flag. I was sure glad I did too, next day they couldn't be found anywhere in my area of southern Dallas. Tells us something about what others did as well.
